    The flowers in the garden are starting to bloom, winter’s chill seems like a faded memory and college basketball just wrapped things up for the year. So you know what time of the year it is, right? Of course, it’s tax time!

  • Rough week for Commanders

    One week you’re hot, the next week you’re not. If anyone ever had doubts that baseball is a game of streaks, they haven’t followed the Washington County Commanders the past couple of weeks.

    After starting off the season with three consecutive wins, the Commanders have dropped four straight with losses last week against Russell County, Boyle County, Bethlehem and Marion County.

  • New security steps going smoothly at judicial center

    The moment people walk into the new judicial center in Springfield, they can tell that things are done differently than in the past. After entering on the right, visitors are told to empty their pockets and then proceed through a metal detector. If needed, the court security officer on duty will use a wand detector to check specific parts of the body.

  • Commanders start strong

    The Washington County Commanders opened up the 2009 baseball season early last week by winning their first three games, including a 12-4 victory over Fort Knox March 24 to open home play. The early impression is that WC has some pop in their bats and some speed on the bases. Things looked a little shaky on the defensive side, but it’s nothing that can’t be solved by practice and communication.

    The premise that 4-H was founded on over 100 years ago was to teach life skills to young people they could use throughout their lives and to be successful in their career choice.  One 4-H project that has achieved this goal is the 4-H Talk Meet program.

  • GILLISPIE COULD BE IN COMMAND AT WASHINGTON COUNTY!

    Billy Gillispie a Commander? That could be a possibility as Washington County High School Athletic Director Glen Goatley considers his college friend and former UK basketball coach as a candidate to fill the boys head coach spot vacated by Paul Bodenhamer.

    WCHS Principal Leon Smith agreed with Goatley’s decision and thinks the basketball program at WC could use a spark of excitement.

    “We were just starting to search for a coach, and one falls almost right into our lap,” said Smith.

    If there was one foe that Washington County couldn’t overcome last week, it was Mother Nature. Several days of rain forced the cancellation of several games. The Commanderettes practiced indoors Friday and Sunday afternoon in hopes of getting back out onto the field.

  • Cleanup efforts continue for county, but costs could rise

    Storm debris cleanup by the Washington County Road Department has come to a grinding halt because the brush chipper being used by the crews has died. Road crew director Albert Wimsatt informed Washington County Fiscal Court Friday morning that it would cost $11,100 to replace the engine. The breakdown comes as the county has completed only one-third of the roads.

  • Relay for Life golf scramble is May 9

    It's been a long, cold winter, and chances are pretty good that area golfers are looking for an excuse to hit the links. Now is the time to dust of your clubs and tee off for a great cause at the same time.

    The Washington County Relay for Life Golf Scramble will take place at Lincoln Homestead State Park on May 9. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the shotgun start gets underway at 9 a.m. with prizes awarded for first and second place.
