    A brand new multi-million dollar building like the Washington County Judicial Center doesn’t just run itself. It takes a highly qualified individual to oversee the daily upkeep and maintenance of such a building. That’s where Richard “Ricky” Edelen enters the picture. As the maintenance person for the center, it’s up to him to keep everything running in top condition at Washington County’s newest landmark.

  • Church camp wants you to take a hike May 2

    Alan Cooper, manager of Camp Calvary in Washington County, would like everyone to take a hike – literally! Saturday, May 2 is Hike Day at the camp, which is used as a fundraiser for the facility. Participants in the hike are asked to raise money by having people pledge so much per mile hiked. The hike is approximately five miles around the camp property.

  • Check scams target locals

    A Washington County woman received a check in the mail on Wednesday, along with a letter informing her that she had won a prize of $250,000. Obviously it sounded too good to be true to the woman, and for good reason, so she took the letter and the check to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office where she was assisted by Deputy Jackie Robinson.

    The letter said the woman’s name had been selected randomly as the result of an international sweepstakes drawn on March 20 in the United Kingdom.

  • Pythium root rot damages transplants

    Besides blank shank, this is the worst disease we have to deal with.  In the float systems, occasionally this is fatal, but mostly what it does is rob you of time.  With the serious outbreak of this disease it will set the affected plants back four to six weeks.  Most people can’t afford that kind of waiting period.  So, please pay attention to this article and manage accordingly.

  • Commanderettes bash Banshees, 16-6

    The Washington County Commanderettes improved to 3-5 on the season with a 7-6 win over Adair County Thursday evening and evened their district record at 1-1 with a 16-6 shelling of Bethlehem the night before.

    Following a cancellation due to lightning against Nelson County on April 13 that saw the Lady Cardinals leading 4-0 after 3 1/2 innings of play, the Commanderettes headed back to Bardstown on Wednesday to wail on the Banshees.

  • Lincoln statue unveiled

    The new statue of President Abraham Lincoln was unveiled Wednesday in front of the Washington County Judicial Center. A large crowd gathered in the center of downtown Springfield for the ceremony.

    Sen. Dan Kelly (R-Springfield), sculptor Paula Slater, and Rep. Mike Harmon (R) House District 54, worked together to unveil the statue following speeches from several local dignitaries, as well as remarks from Lincoln portrayor Jim Getty, of Gettysburg, Pa.

  • Two dead after Saturday accident

    A two-vehicle accident in Washington County has left two people dead.

    Barbara Walker, 72, of Harrodsburg, and her husband, Martin Walker III, 72, also of Harrodsburg, both died after a collision on US 150 about six miles outside Springfield Saturday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m.

  • 4-H members participate in Lincoln Trail Variety Show

    These days we are bombarded with special days and months to honor various causes, and there are so many, it is impossible to keep up with them all.  Although we wonder sometimes why recognition of so many days or months have been created, I have found that it helps to remind me of the importance of those causes perhaps to our community, or to our state or our country.  During April, we celebrate/honor several causes including Earth Day (April 22), Arbor Day (April 24), Kentucky Writers’ Day (April 24) and April as National Poetry Month, Children and Nature Awareness Month an

  • Commanders fight hard against Shelby, Bethlehem

    The Washington County Commanders baseball team took to the road last Thursday as they visited Shelby County for a showdown against the Rockets.

    In spite of some well-played baseball, the Commanders came up short in a 7-6 loss.

    5th Region All A Classic

    The next day, Washington County headed up to bardstown to lock up with the Bethlehem Eagles in the first round of the 5th Region All-A Classic baseball tournament.
