    The St. Catharine College men’s golf team will begin its spring schedule on Monday with a tournament hosted by the University of the Cumberlands at Crooked Creek Golf Course. The women’s team will start April 6 in a tournament at London Country Club, also hosted by Cumberlands.

  • Local pastor looking for Heavenly hoops

    How often can someone say they are ministering and serving God by playing basketball? If Kelsey Hopson, pastor of Johnson Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Springfield has his way, there will be plenty of layups and amens on the hardwood this spring.

    Hopson, along with league director Felix Keene, are forming the Real Life Basketball League to be played at River of Life Church in Springfield.

  • WC softball begins 2009 season at Taylor County

    Despite some big hits, the WC Commanderettes softball team dropped their season opener 9-7 to Taylor County Monday.

    The Commanderettes got off to an early 2-0 start in the first inning as they held the Lady Cardinals hitless through the first two innings. Taylor County tied it up in the third and took a 4-2 lead in the fourth.

  • UK fires Billy Gillispie

    The University of Kentucky has announced that men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie has been fired, according to reports by the Lexington Herald-Leader and ESPN. A news conference is set for 4:30 p.m. today.

    The news comes after Gillispie posted a 40-27 record in two years at UK, including a 22-14 slate this season as the Wildcats missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991 while on probation following the tenure of former coach Eddie Sutton.

  • City tourism tax an early success

    Thanks to some hearty appetites and overnight travelers, Springfield’s three-percent tourism tax is generating some much-needed revenue that will help promote the city and improve the quality of life in town.

    The tax was instituted on May 1, 2008, and adds three cents per dollar to purchases at food and lodging establishments in the city.

  • April Reinle crowned Miss University of Louisville

    April Reinle has wanted to compete in the Miss America pageant since she was a little girl. Now, the 18-year-old Springfield native might just be on her way.

    Reinle was crowned Miss University of Louisville Wednesday, March 11, and with that honor comes a spot in the 2009 Miss Kentucky pageant, which sends its winner on to the Miss America pageant.

    Reinle said she was surprised with the win, and when her number was called, she had to look at her own number to make sure it was her.

  • March 27 is last day for city debris pickup

    The Springfield City Council has set March 27 as the last day the public works department will pick up fallen tree limbs from residents.

    “We really need to set a deadline and say this is the last day debris will be picked up,” Public Works Director Glenn Mattingly told the council at their meeting held last Tuesday.

    Council member Mike Elliott asked Mattingly about allowing citizens to call if they have limbs to be picked up in specific locations.

  • SCC drops doubleheaders

    The St. Catharine College softball team found the wet weather unsuitable for many of the games scheduled last week. And when the Patriots did hit the diamond, Holly Smith found the results unsuitable as well for her team. The Patriots, now 9-9, traveled to Midway College on Monday and lost both games, and then dropped a twin bill at Indiana University Southeast on Wednesday.

    Following the discussion of placing a police officer at Washington County High School to serve as a school resource officer, principal Leon Smith is looking to assure parents and the community that he sees the idea as strictly a preventative measure, and in no way anticipates a threat to the safety of students.

  • Winning streak goes to 10 games

    Finding ways to win. That is the way Luther Bramblett summarized his team’s performance over the last week as the Patriots won all five of their games, and all of them by one run.

    “Overall our pitching staff has done a good job, but our offense has really carried us,” said the St. Catharine skipper, whose team has now won 10 consecutive games to go to 17-3 for the season. “What is most surprising is that we have won that many without having our full lineup in for most of those games.”
