    Cell phones are one of the most convenient modern devices in the world today, but for many schools, they are also a growing problem.

    Washington County High School Principal Leon Smith said his school has had some recent incidents, and many of them have stemmed from the use of cell phones and text messaging.

  • Patriot softball goes 7-1 for the week

    SCC Sports Information

    With seven wins in eight games last week, Holly Smith’s St. Catharine College softball team improved its record to 16-10. More importantly, two of the wins (against Cumberlands) were conference contests which kept the Patriots atop the standings with a 4-0 record.

    “We hadn’t been hitting the ball, so we just took batting practice every day,” said Smith. “And when we start hitting we play well in all parts of the game. Our pitching is better and we play better defense.”

  • Local couple facing federal tax indictment

    A federal grand jury in Louisville has returned an indictment against Kevin Buckler and Kathy Buckler of Springfield on March 18, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky.

    The indictment charges the Bucklers with filing false federal tax returns for 2001 and 2002 in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(I). The Bucklers were arrested and arraigned in United States District Court in Louisville.

  • Athlete with local ties has big day at Hanover

    Junior first baseman Michael Smith (Fort Thomas, Ky.) dropped a squeeze bunt with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Hanover College’s baseball team a 5-4 triumph against Capital University (Ohio) in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, March 14, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

    Michael Smith was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored.

    Hanover will play a double header locally on May 2nd  at 5 p.m. against Centre College in Danville, Ky.

    The St. Catharine College men’s golf team will begin its spring schedule on Monday with a tournament hosted by the University of the Cumberlands at Crooked Creek Golf Course. The women’s team will start April 6 in a tournament at London Country Club, also hosted by Cumberlands.
