  • SCC women finish first NAIA roundball season

    The St. Catharine College women’s basketball team finished the season with two losses last week. The setbacks left Lena Bramblett’s team with a final slate of 12-18 overall and a Mid-South Conference mark of 2-10.

  • BBQ cookoff prize money set at $8,000

    The Jim Beam BBQ Classic, a Kentucky State Championship Competition, will be held in Springfield, Ky. Oct. 2-3, 2009 as part of the Kentucky Crossroads Harvest Festival.  The competition offers $8,000 in total cash prizes and awards.

  • Scholarship will honor late superintendent

    Larry Graves loved the students of Washington County, and his passion was to see them educated as well as possible.

    Graves, the retired superintendent of Washington County Schools, passed away June 8, 2008 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

    Graves and his wife, Terral, lived in Washington County for five years, and they quickly saw the local community as their new home.

    Emily and Jason Cheek of Bardstown announce the birth of their daughter on Feb. 17, 2009 at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville.

    Neely Evelyn Rose Cheek weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and was 20 inches in length.

  • Bat Pats sweep weekend series from IUN, play at SEMO today

    The wind was howling, the mercury remained around freezing and some overnight ice threatened one of the weekend games between St. Catharine College and visiting Indiana University Northwest from Gary, Indiana.

    But Luther Bramblett’s Bat Pats made the chilly temperatures a little more bearable at Edelen-Haydon Field by swinging some hot bats in a three-game sweep of the Redhawks who were in action for the first time this season. Saturday saw the Patriots sweep a twin bill by scores of 10-0 and 9-6. Sunday they plucked the Redhawks 22-1.

    The St. Catharine College softball team has already had three doubleheaders postponed due to inclement weather. And, just as the weather has been up and down, so has Holly Smith’s Patriots who are off to a 2-4 start. After getting swept in the season opening DH at Bellarmine, Smith’s group responded with a sweep at Alice Lloyd College before losing twice at Union.

  • Season ends with two losses

    The St. Catharine College basketball season ended last Saturday with J.T. Burton’s Patriots falling 77-63 at Lindsey Wilson College. That followed Thursday’s 78-42 setback at Georgetown giving the Patriots a final record of 5-25 in their first NAIA campaign.

  • Local students will get one day of spring break

    They’ve had their break, now the students of Washington County will have to do some extra time in the classroom.

    Following the 10 days missed for the ice and snow storm that left much of the county without power for several days, students are now set to attend school on four of the days that were previously slated to be spring break days.
