  • If disaster funds become available, document damage now to help

    If you are a farmer or tree fruit producer and you sustained damage to your operation from the late January ice storm, there are some steps you can take that will greatly help if any agricultural disaster funds are made available in the future.

    If your farm has sustained damage to fences, buildings and/or equipment, the first thing you should do is take photographs of the damage. Pictures will help you prove that a loss occurred even if you have to make immediate repairs. Also, document any purchased material and labor that was needed to repair the damaged items.

  • County still looking into bulky item cleanup

    Washington County is still debating the bulky item cleanup program in the county. The effort to clean up after the ice storm may cause a delay in the program, but fiscal court members received nothing but positive feedback from residents in favor of the program. Since state storm cleanup will take 60 days, the county is considering putting off the bulky item cleanup until the storm cleanup is complete, possibly some time in April.

  • Don't pick trees solely based on ice storm

    As expected, I had several people ask me what was the best tree species to plant in place of the ones being cut down and they want ones that will survive the next ice storm. Well, the answer is, there isn’t one. All tree species sustained damage, however, some worse than others.  For instance, “Bradford” pear was destroyed and it’s a no-brainer to not plant them again, because they also fail in high winds pretty regularly.

    Bethany LeAnnne Sutton and Justin Wade Fallis

    Larry and Sharon Sutton of Willisburg announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Bethany LeAnne, to Justin Wade Fallis of Willisburg. He is the son of Cathy and Danny Clarkson and Tommy and Mary Anne Fallis, all of Springfield.

    The wedding will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Willisburg Baptist Church in Willisburg.

    The reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Springfield.

  • Local shelter reaches out during storm

    “We’ll just have to wait and tough it out.”

    Offus Lewis of Mackville had that outlook on things Thursday afternoon as he and his family settled into the emergency shelter at the Opera House in Springfield. Lewis, with his wife Sheila and their two children, had been without power since Tuesday, as had much of the county. He said they tried to wait things out, but finally, decided to seek shelter.

  • Few crimes reported during storm

    On Monday morning, a tire tool was still lying in the middle of the floor at the Southern States store on Bardstown Road in Springfield. The tool served as a reminder of the burglary that took place there over the weekend, according to store manager Tony Hamilton.

    “They busted the front door out with a tire tool,” he said of the weekend’s burglary, which saw the store lose about $4,000 worth of inventory, most of which was in the form of propane heaters.
