  • Man remains in serious condition at Louisville hospital after wreck on Bloomfield Road

    A 20-year-old Springfield man remained in serious – but stable – condition at University Hospital in Louisville on Monday, after he apparently lost control of his 1984 Chevy pick-up Friday afternoon and struck a ditch on Bloomfield Road, just five miles north of Springfield.

    Washington County EMS initially transported James T. Spalding to Spring View Hospital in Lebanon. He was later transferred to Louisville for treatment.

  • Economy forces county to trim 2009 budget

    With a shortfall of occupational taxes expected next year, the Washington County Fiscal Court is looking for ways to cut back.

    “We've got to trim some budget somewhere,” said Judge/Executive John A. Settles. “Occupational taxes are one of the greatest income generators that the county has and I think we can all understand that income to the county is going to start going down.”

    I bought my girlfriend Cindy a Nintendo Wii for Christmas along with the Wii Fit add-on package. Shhh, don't tell her, it's a surprise! She really wanted to get these, so I figured it would be a great excuse to buy a video game system. Afterall, I can justify it by saying it's meant to get us in better shape.

  • A new home for the holidays

    This Christmas is pretty much like previous Christmases for Ange Umulisa. She is used to decorating the Christmas tree and having strings of lights around the house. But this year, Christmas is different because she is not in her native country of Rwanda.

    “(In Rwanda) we have the tree and the lights,” said Umulisa. “But there's no snow and it's not too cold, like here.”

  • Commanderettes down Bethlehem 47-41 for first win

    The Washington County Commanderettes notched their first victory of the season Friday night with a 47-41 defeat of the Bethlehem Banshees. The win puts WC at 1-6 on the season and evens their district record to 1-1.

    Earlier in the week, the Commanderettes hosted the Bardstown Lady Tigers in WC’s first district pairing of the season. Bardstown left Springfield with a 49-34 win.

  • Patriots shoot down Eagles for second victory

    On Nov. 19, the St. Catharine College Patriots let what would have been their first victory of the year slip away when a missed dunk at the buzzer force the game into overtime where they lost at Alice Lloyd 80-76.

    One month later, however, now stocked with two point guards who just became eligible, J.T. Burton’s bunch avenged that loss by shooting down the same Alice Lloyd Eagles 87-68 in Lourdes Hall.

Pastor Troy Shelton said this community, as well as churches in it, have people who are struggling in their marriages, and he and his church hope to offer help with the upcoming showing of a new movie called Fireproof.

    It’s been nearly three seasons since Washington County native Brittany Edelen played for the Commanderettes, finishing her prep career as WC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,559 points. Now in her third year with the Kentucky Wildcats womens basketball team, Edelen is getting more playing time on the hardwood, due in part to some injuries.

  • Hawks, Eagles prey on Commanders

    The birds of prey swooped into Springfield this week as the LaRue County Hawks and the Bethlehem Eagles took two games from the Washington County Commanders. LaRue beat WC 67-58 Wednesday night and the Eagles from Bethlehem won 64-48 Friday night as the Commanders fall to 0-6 on the season and 0-1 to start district play.
