  • Local family trying to recover after house fire

    When David Thompson and his wife Denise came home from work after a late second shift at Inoac last Tuesday morning, they were horrified to find their home had caught fire, and everything they owned was inside.

    David Thompson said the fire was discovered at about 4 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, and fortunately, no one was at home. The Thompsons, along with a daughter, Amber, had lived in their home on Mayes Creek Road for the past four years. David said Amber, who is seven months pregnant, was staying with a cousin, or things might have been much worse.

  • Lions/Rotary auction raises $8,000

    This past Sunday was the 67th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, and although there was never a threat of an invasion, if you tuned into WLSK 100.9 MIKE FM from 1 to 5 p.m., it may have sounded like a major military operation was underway as code names and other mysterious sounding dialog filled the airwaves for a few hours. Opposing sides traded counterstrikes and strategic moves were made, but listeners were never in harm's way. It was only the annual Lions/Rotary radio auction taking place.

  • Body condition scores are good indicators of herd health

    Many of you all know Dr. Les Anderson. He would like to share some information that may be critical for this winter in your profitability.

    Early winter is an optimum time to prepare your spring-calving herd for reproductive success. Adequate nutrition from about 50 to 80 days prior to calving is critical to maximizing a cow’s ability to rebreed and maintain a 365-day calving interval. If a cow gets inadequate nutrition or is thin at calving and breeding, she will take longer to come into heat and will require more services to conceive.

  • Springfield to host state barbeque championship

    Temperatures are usually starting to cool down in early October around Springfield, but things are certain to heat up next year when the third annual Kentucky Crossroads Harvest Festival will crown a new Kentucky barbeque champion.

    Dawn Pettus, executive director of the Springfield-Washington County Chamber of Commerce, said the local festival’s annual barbeque cook-off has been certified to crown a state champion, as well as some other honors in the barbeque circle.

  • Comedian Keith McGill is next act in chamber's concert series

    Keith McGill is coming back to Springfield.

    McGill, a Louisville native, is a nationally known comedian whose Jan. 24 show will be the fourth in a series of concerts presented by the Springfield-Washington County Chamber of Commerce at the Opera House.

  • WC girls start season 0-2

    With back-to-back losses to start the season, the Washington County Commanderettes are off to a shaky start.

    The girls opened the season at home hosting Taylor County on Dec. 2.

    The Commanderettes got strong outings from Shay Yocum, Pooh Railey and Lizzy Haydon in the first half, although Taylor County had built a 31-24 lead at the break thanks to some strong post play.

  • Patriots fall twice in Georgetown tournament

    The St. Catharine College Patriots dropped two games last weekend at the Jim Reid Classic played at Georgetown College. On Friday, J.T. Burton’s team lost a 73-59 decision to Aquinas College (Michigan) and Saturday they fell 81-63 to Edward Waters College (Florida). The two setbacks give the Patriots a 1-12 slate with one game remaining in the first semester schedule.
