  • Clements found not guilty in social host ordinance case

    What began as a party for 10 or 12 friends quickly grew to more as uninvited guests showed up on Pat Clements’ property on June 6, 2008.

    That’s what witnesses for the defense told jurors in Washington County District Court last Tuesday, and that’s what the members believed, as the six-person jury returned a not guilty verdict 10 minutes after leaving the courtroom to deliberate the case.

  • Patriots drop two on the road

    Still looking for that elusive first victory, the St. Catharine College Patriots fell to 0-7 with two losses on the road last week. Wednesday at Alice Lloyd J.T. Burton’s team fell 80-76 in overtime. On Saturday they were defeated 81-71 at Berea.

  • Lady Patriots split two

    The St. Catharine College women’s basketball team split two games last week. After losing at home to Alice Lloyd on Tuesday, Lena Bramblett’s Patriots traveled to Owensboro on Saturday where they beat Brescia. The Patriots are now 4-4 for the season.

    “On Tuesday I thought we looked tired for the first time,” said Bramblett whose team fell 65-53 to Alice Lloyd. “Our schedule has been tough in November. We just haven’t maintained the consistency that we need to have in every game.”

  • Commanderettes will rely on youth and speed

    For the Washington County Commanderette basketball team, it all comes down to the fundamentals. Head coach Bernard Smalley has been working the girls hard in preparation for the upcoming season. This will be Smalley’s second year as head coach, and he’s looking to improve on the 8-18 record from last year.

    “We have a lot of quickness this year,” said Smalley. “I have a lot of kids who have potential.”

  • Christmas comes to Springfield Dec. 5-7

    Christmas will be coming to Springfield a few weeks early as the city, along with neighboring Lebanon, hosts the Heart of Kentucky Holiday Festival Dec. 5-7.

    This is the fourth year for the event, which will feature a weekend full of activities for young and old.

  • Commanders had highs and lows on the gridiron

    Although the season’s win/loss ratio didn’t reflect it, it was actually a very productive year for the Washington County football team. Despite their 4-7 record, the Commanders were one of the top producing offenses in Kentucky 2A football.

  • Local youths go scouting for food

    A group of Cub Scouts from Mackville and Willisburg were out and about Saturday as part of the annual Scouting for Food event.

    Cynthia Porter, cub master of Pack 458, gathered her young scouts and their parents Saturday morning to collect food for the needy in Washington County. Formed just three years ago, Pack 458 has grown from six members to 25, according to Porter. She said the event has been a success, and continues to grow each year.
