  • Lottery proceeds help local students in higher education

    Washington Countians spent more than $1 million on Kentucky Lottery tickets last year. While there were some winners and some losers when it came to lottery prizes, there were hundreds of local winners in the form of college scholarships and grants. A total of $846,260 in lottery proceeds was given to Washington County students, with 503 total awards being given, according to according to figures released by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).

  • Soccer season ends for SCC

    SCC Sports Information

    The St. Catharine College soccer season is over for both the men and women of coach Paul Patton. And, although the victories weren’t as numerous as the coach would have liked, Patton is optimistic about the future of soccer at SCC.

    “We knew that hew schedule would be much tougher as we moved into the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference,” said Patton. “But both of our teams were competitive against most of the teams we played.”

  • District 4 coaches select Simms MVP

    Washington County senior Joe Joe Simms has picked up the Player of the Year award for Kentucky 2A District 4 football from the Kentucky Football Coaches Association. According to KFCA executive director Jimmie Reed, the coaches in each district vote on a coach of the year and a player of the year for their district.

    “It's a great honor but I owe it to my teammates; my linemen, backs and receivers,” said Simms. “I also have to thank the coaching staff.”

  • SURE provides benefits for farm revenue losses

    Supplemental Revenue Assistant Payments (SURE) provides benefits for farm revenue losses due to natural disaster. It is the 2008 Farm Bill’s successor to the prior Ad Hoc Crop Disaster Programs, also known as the CDP or Crop Disaster Programs. Unlike the prior USDA Programs, SURE is legislated through 2011.

    SURE payments are available to producers on farms that:

    • are located in a county covered by a qualifying natural disaster declaration (USDA Secretarial Declarations only) or a contiguous county or

  • Generals fight off Patriots in middle school basketball action

    In middle school basketball action on Monday night North Washington took on Washington County Middle School. In 6th grade action the WCMS Generals defeated the North Washington Patriots 23-18. In 8th grade action the Patriots fell to the Generals 50-20.

  • Help Kentucky's hungry this holiday season

    There are so many things happening around the holidays that we often times get carried away and overwhelmed with our own world and forget about those in need. Unfortunately, some families and individuals in Kentucky do not know where their next meal is coming from, much less Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Since the holidays are a time of giving, those of us that can, should take time from our busy lives to share our blessings with Kentuckians in need this holiday season.

  • Now is the time to winterize strawberry plants

    Perhaps the last garden chore of the season is tucking in the strawberry planting for winter. Strawberry plants have already set their buds for next spring’s flowers and the crop can be lost unless you protect them from harsh winter conditions. A fully dormant strawberry plant’s flower buds can be damaged at temperatures below 15 deg. F.

    In addition to flower bud damage, the alternate freezing and thawing of the soil that commonly occurs in winter and early spring can cause plant roots to break and the plants to be heaved right out of the ground.
