  • WC doubles up Bethlehem, 40-20

    The Washington County Commanders had a limited time of possession Friday night, but put twice as many points on the board as the Bethlehem Eagles. WC won the game 40-20 and improved to 3-4 on the season.

    “It was a good win,” said WC head football coach Mark Perry. “We didn’t play well on the defensive side, but it’s still a win. They say that’s the sign of a good football team, if you don’t play well but you still win the game.”

  • Girls middle school basketball tournaments

    Seventh grade NCAA tournament hosted by WCMS at WCHS

    The Washington County Middle School will host the girls NCAA seventh grade championship basketball game Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7:15 p.m. at the Washington County High School gymnasium.

    Eighth grade NIT tournament to be held in Boston

    The Washington County Middle School girls eighth grade tournament begins in Boston, Ky., Monday, Oct. 27 with St. Domince playing at 6 p.m. and North Washington at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, Washington Co. will play at 6 p.m.

  • St. Catharine soccer split with Pikeville

    The St. Catharine College men and women’s soccer teams traveled to Pikeville Saturday for Mid-South Conference competition. The Patriots came out with a 3-1 win but the Lady patriots dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime.

    The women battled to a scoreless tie in regulation as goalkeeper Tabby Shirley recorded seven saves. But nine minutes into the extra period Pikeville converted a corner kick into a goal for the game winner.

  • Grazing conference to address rising costs

    Livestock producers have been some of the hardest hit by skyrocketing fuel, input and feed prices. To help producers get through this economic crunch, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture specialists and industry professionals will offer cost-saving information on pasture management during the ninth Kentucky Grazing Conference.

    The conference is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Fayette County Extension Office in Lexington.

    A political debate between candidates for local elected positions is slated for Thursday, Oct. 23.

    The debate is being sponsored by the Springfield-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Channel 6 TV.

    Candidates for Springfield City Council, as well as school board seats in District 4 and District 5 will discuss issues, as well as fielding questions submitted by viewers via telephone or e-mail.

  • Commanders continue to top state 2A leader boards

    Washington County quarterback Joe Joe Simms continues to lead Kentucky Class 2A in passing yardage, touchdowns and completion percentage for players with five minimum games played on the season according to stats at www.khsaa.org.

    Simms has tallied 1,439 net passing yards through six games and has 15 touchdown passes. He has completed 110 of 181 attempts for a completion rate of 60.7 percent.

  • Dominican Sisters announce new name

    With their impending union with six other congregations this coming Easter, the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine of Siena have announced the name of the new congregation. Effective April 12, 2009, the union will collectively be known as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
