  • 4-H'ers win ribbons at Kentucky State Fair

    Washington County 4-H members had outstanding representation at this year’s Kentucky State Fair. Besides entering 4-H projects and showing various livestock, Washington County also took an active leadership role by providing the hosts for Cloverville one day.

    Volunteer teen and adult leaders helped state fair goers locate 4-H projects and be familiar with Cloverville which is the mock town that Kentucky 4-H uses to showcase all of the 4-H projects entered at the state fair.

  • Commanderettes advance in district play

    The Washington County Commanderette volleyball team found new life in the postseason with a 2-1 win over Bethlehem in the first round of the 17th District Tournament on Monday night. With the victory, the girls guaranteed themselves a spot in the 5th Region Tournament at Central Hardin, which begins Oct. 20.

    The Commanderettes got off to a shaky start in game one, but Morgan Thomas went on a 9-0 run in service and WC fought back to win 25-23.

  • Drought putting damper on state's soybean yield

    Kentucky’s soybean harvest yield estimate for September was down 8 percent from August but up 69 percent over last year at this time, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The increase is due to greater yields per acre and more acreage in soybeans. On the surface the number sounds impressive until the poor yields of 2007 are taken into consideration.

  • Fall cornhole league wraps up

    Idle Hour Park's fall cornhole league wrapped up on Monday night with the league tournament. Phillip Haydon and Keith White won a one game tie-breaker against Michael Smalley and Tony Churchill to take the championship. The team of Smalley and Churchill took second place. Third place was won by the team of Bobby Joe Mattingly and Bernard Smalley.

  • YMCA adult basketball league

    The Wilderness Trace Family YMCA will offer an adult basketball league starting Nov. 2. Games will be played on Sunday afternoons at the YMCA in Harrodsburg. Registration deadline is Oct. 17. Call the YMCA toll-free at (877) 734-9622.

  • From Left Field: Cubs get lemons, can’t make lemonade

    Whew! Just when I thought someone had kidnapped the real Chicago Cubs and replaced them with another team, they finally showed up in the NLDS against the Dodgers. With the sweep over the Cubs by Los Angeles, I can sleep well at night knowing that the continued curse of the Cubs is still intact.

  • Toyotomi expanding, adding equipment

    Toyotomi first arrived in Washington County nearly 10 years ago, and for the past eight years, the company has been producing automotive products in the community while providing employment to local workers. Despite tough times in the economy locally and globally, the company has announced a $1 million expansion of its current facilities, as well as the purchase of a new $7 million transfer press to be used in the manufacture of some of its products.

  • Commanders’ air attack is tops in state

    If you can’t go through them, then go over their heads. That seems to be the new approach to Washington County’s offense this season. With a young squad loaded with sophomores and freshmen, the Commanders have taken to the air to put some points on the board, and it seems to be a productive method of operation. WC is at the top or near the top of all offensive categories in Kentucky Class 2A football.

  • Church, restaurant hit by burglars

    According to Springfield Police, a local church and a restaurant were robbed some time Sunday night. Authorities say someone used a pry bar to open a locked door and gain entry to The River of Life Church on KY 555 in Springfield.

    A pry bar was also used to open several locked offices. The suspect(s) took some money from a desk and also stole money from a soda machine.

    In what police say is a related incident, someone also used a pry bar that same night to break into Backyard BBQ, located at the intersection of KY 555 and Lincoln Park Road in Springfield.
