  • Third annual middle school football championship Oct. 2

    A county-wide middle school football championship will be held Oct. 2 at the WCHS football field. The action starts at 6 p.m. with a sixth grade game between Washington County and North Washington, followed by the championship game between Washington County Middle School and St. Dominic at 7:30 p.m. The traveling trophy will be presented to the winner and an MVP award handed out. All proceeds benefit the WCHS DECA program.

  • Thompkins earns player of the week

    Freshman Ashley Thompkins made history at St. Catharine College last week by becoming the first athlete from the school to earn Player of the Week honors from the Mid-South Conference.

    The forward from Hopkinsville scored six of her team's eight goals in victories over Midway College and Berea College.

    Voting for the award is done by each of the seven member schools in the conference.

    St. Catharine is a new member of the Mid-South Conference as it became an NAIA institution for the first time this fall.

  • ‘Racy’ books pulled from library shelves

    Joy Wandrey has been director of the Washington County Public Library since March. She came with plans to build the library as a resource for the community, and she said early on that she wanted to get the Hispanic community involved in using the library. Now, the effort to serve that portion of the community has brought concerns about materials purchased by Wandrey, and some of the new books she has purchased have already been pulled from the shelves.

  • SCC women fall twice in volleyball action

    Head volleyball coach Juanita Mangan does not teach science at St. Catharine College. But she did conduct an experiment Saturday morning with the student/athletes on her team. And even though the experiment did not net a win in either match played that day, Mangan was pleased with what the future could hold.

  • Local couple thinks Civil War graves have been found on their property

    Owners of the old Jack Arnold House think their yard and pastures may be the home to more than just dry bluegrass.

    Ben and Susan Breeding of Washington County believe their front yard and side pastures are home to about 340 full Civil War graves and possibly many burial sites for human limbs.

    The Breedings, along with Sherry Robinson, a Kentucky Division officer for the United Daughters of the Confederacy, said the house was a hospital during the Civil War, and they believe limbs were pitched over the front porch after surgery.
