  • WC volleyball roller coaster continues

    It's literally been an up and down season so far for the Commanderette volleyball team. As soon as they reach a high point, they take start the plunge down the hill. After going 2-4 in the Woodford County Invitational and climbing back to beat Taylor County on Sept. 8, Washington County traveled to Elizabethtown to face the Panthers.

    Even though they played a solid game and performed well, the WC varsity team lost the first game 25-23.

  • YMCA hosts punt, pass and kick event

    Young pro football fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when Wilderness Trace YMCA will host an NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Washington County High School football field.

    The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8-15. For competition information, call 1-877-734-9622. Entry forms also are available from all schools, YMCA and online. Players must show proof of age. Volunteers are needed.

    I had no idea when I moved to Springfield that I would be granted a front row seat to one of Kentucky’s premier sporting events – racing! Now rather than hold these “need for speed” events at a sanctioned NASCAR venue or even on a dirt track, the participants of these events have cleverly decided to hold them on the public roadways.

  • Rizer wins at Senior Kentucky State Golf Tournament

    Joan Rizer, golf coach at St. Catharine College, finished both first and third last week at the 29th Senior Women’s Kentucky State Golf Championship. Divided into age groups for the event played at Lone Oak in Nicholasville, Rizer finished first in the “freshmen” division (ages 55-59) and was third overall in the field of 126 players.

  • CATS tests show local schools highly ranked

    The Washington County School District has been recognized by the Kentucky Department of Education as an “exemplary growth district” following the recent release of scores from the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS).

    Only 64 of Kentucky’s 175 school districts have received this recognition. All schools in the district are progressing or meeting their goals, and the schools have also met the dropout and novice reduction goals set by the state. As a district, they rank fifth out of 18 districts in this region.

  • Sammi to the rescue!

    He stands about six inches tall, and he weighs 15 pounds, but don’t let his size fool you. Sammi is a big little dog.

    He’s not your typical super hero, but Sammi came to the rescue for Kathy Harvey and her son Kyle three years ago, and now, he’s part of the family.

    Kyle, 22, is autistic. In addition, he began to have unrelated seizures more than three years ago. Kathy said that was when she became concerned for his safety. Kyle had wanted a dog, but Kathy never imagined that a dog would be able to help with Kyle’s seizures.

  • Volleyball squads have tough, busy week on the hardwood

    It’s been a busy week for the Washington County volleyball team as the squad played nine teams in eight days. The Commanderettes started play with a 6-5 record on Sept. 2. After back-to-back losses to Central Hardin and Marion County, which saw WC getting swept in both outings, the WC ladies looked to redeem themselves against a tough Campbellsville squad.

    I'm a big fan of the Andy Griffith Show, and one of my favorite episodes is the one where his son Opie learns to throw temper tantrums from his friend Arnold. Of course, Andy, in his infinite wisdom, sees right through Opie's deceit and, as Barney Fife would put it, nips it in the bud.
