  • Departments seek new fire station

    Anybody who suffers from claustrophobia wouldn’t want to be a member of the Springfield or Washington County fire departments right now. That’s because a lack of space at the armory in Springfield is making life too close for comfort, as they must park some vehicles outside while squeezing other trucks into the bays with little room left over to breathe. That’s why the Washington County Fire Protection Association presented plans to build a new fire station to Washington County Fiscal Court and Springfield City Council last week.

  • GM drops 'Hammer' on local dealership

    When General Motors sent letters to more than 1,100 of its 6,000 dealers last week telling them that they will no longer do business with those dealers in 2010, Hammer Chevrolet in Springfield was among the letter recipients.

    Still, according to Mark Clark, general manager of Hammer Chevrolet, that does not mean the end of the local dealership, which is in the approval process of a sale to Eddie Franklin, a Columbia, Ky., based car dealer who already owns Ford, Chevrolet, and Nissan dealerships.

  • County nears the end of storm cleanup; bulky item drop-off extended

    It’s hard to believe it’s almost the end of May and there’s still debris to be picked up from the January ice storm. But that goes to show just how severe the damage was. The Washington County Fiscal Court met last Monday and discussed ways to finish the clean-up.

    State-hired contractors ceased work on May 21 after cutting several roads in the county.

  • SCC golfers complete season

    SCC Sports Information

    The St. Catharine College golf teams completed the spring season with the Mid-South Conference tournament held at Nevel Meade Golf Course. In their first year as a conference member, St. Catharine was not eligible for team honors but could still compete as individuals.

    Scott Johnson gave the top individual effort for the Patriots as he placed fifth overall with a 36-hole total of 152 (77-75).

  • Patriot athletes earn All-Conference honors

    All-conference honors were announced recently by the Mid-South Conference. And, in the first year as a member, athletes from St. Catharine College were well represented.

    Heading the honors list were baseball player Travis Adams and softball player Sharonda Mangan.

    In addition, seven softball players received honorable mention and five baseball players were on the honorable mention list.

    Three Patriots were also named to the baseball all-academic team for the Mid-South.

  • Judicial center dedicated

    It’s a project that has been in the works for several years now, and finally, the new Washington County Judicial Center is open for business.

    The center was officially opened a few weeks ago, but a celebration of the new facility was held Friday with state and local dignitaries, including Chief Justice of Kentucky’s Supreme Court, John D. Minton Jr.

  • KECI recruiting next class of fellows

     A community’s wealth is tied in large measure to its entrepreneurs, according to Ron Hustedde, extension professor in the Department of Community and Leadership Development in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. Hustedde is the director of Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute, which is recruiting in 22 south central Kentucky counties for its next class of fellows

  • McCain to attend IFAL

    Fergus McCain, a junior at Washington County High School, has been chosen to attend the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL), sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau.

    IFAL is a unique five-day summer leadership conference that exposes students to college life and explores different fields of study for careers in agriculture.

    The conference will be held June 21-25 on the campus of the University of Kentucky and will include special leadership classes and speakers; team building recreation activities; and visits to research farms and agriculture-related industries.

  • Commanderettes fall to Taylor County in 5th Region tournament opener

    In regular-season games this year the Taylor and Washington county softball teams were separated by one run in a two-game split. On Monday in Radcliff, in the first round of the 5th Region tournament, the two teams couldn’t have been farther apart.

    Taylor County used 16 free passes, served up by two Commanderette pitchers, and run-ruled WC 12-0 in five innings.
