  • City sees drop in revenue in 2010

    Like many other businesses around the country, the city of Springfield is seeing its revenue drop.
    The question now is how it will cut costs or increase revenue to offset that drop.
    Danny Hardin, a certified public accountant, presented the city council with an audit of the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2010.

  • Court will continue its support of fire fee

    All signs point to the end of the fire protection conflict in the county as the Washington County Fiscal Court showed its support to continue the $45 fire fee Monday. The Washington County Fire Protection Association had requested that formal support as the group seeks funding to construct a new fire station.

  • Patriot baseball home opener is Friday


    The St. Catharine College baseball team that went 1-3 in its opening weekend at the University of Mobile will play the home opener Friday against Holy Cross College.
    The single nine-inning game will start at 2 p.m. at Edelen-Haydon Field. The Patriots will host the same Holy Cross team in a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
    The homestand continues Sunday when Goshen College visits for a twin bill starting at 1 p.m.

  • Patriot basketball sweeps UVA-Wise


    The St. Catharine College men and women swept a Mid-South Conference basketball doubleheader Thursday night at UVA-Wise.

    Lena Bramblett’s women came away with an 84-73 win in the opener and J.T. Burton’s men won the nightcap 85-62.
    The Patriot women held a slim 36-34 lead at halftime, but pulled away after intermission for the 11-point victory. Nearly half the Patriots’ points in the second half came at the foul line where they hit 21 of 26 free throws. They were 26-33 on charity tosses for the game.

  • Patriots squeak by Bears twice

      
    In two of the most exciting games of the season, the St. Catharine College men and women used last- second heroics to pull out two wins Saturday at Pikeville College in Mid-South Conference basketball.

     In the women’s game, freshman guard Carol Ruiz-Lopez nailed a three-point goal with two seconds to play to give the Patriots a 70-69 win. Brandon Johnson then provided similar fireworks as he canned a trey with 14 seconds left and the Patriots held on for a 71-69 victory.

  • Cambron inducted into HOF


    Four former St. Johns Country Day School (Fla.) student-athletes were recently inducted into the Orange Park, Fla. private school’s athletic hall of fame.
     
    The hall of fame was established four years ago “to honor athletes who have brought recognition to themselves and to St. Johns with their pursuit of excellence on the playing field and beyond,” according to a news release.
    Joe Cambron, class of 1986,  son of Fabian Cambron of Springfield, was one of the 2010 inductees.

  • Linda’s last home stand


    A fixture of Washington County girls’ basketball will stepping down soon.

    Linda Hourigan, the team’s long-time statistician, will be keeping the book for the Commanderettes for the last time at home on Friday.
    For her, the journey has been a long one, filled with fouls, free throws and fourth quarters.
    I knew Hourigan before I knew her. My wife’s father, Freddie Leathers, used to coach the Marion County girls’ basketball team. My wife was a manager for his teams.
