    Dear Editor,

    There must have been 100 people lined up at the door of the Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home Thursday when the doors opened for Mike Haydon’s visitation. I was one of them, and my talks with others in the line prompt me to write this letter, as well as my knowledge of Mike as a leader at both the local and state levels.

    Dear Editor,

    With a school board vote coming up on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at 120 Mackville Hill, it’s time for the taxpayers of Washington County to get their calculators out and thinking caps on.
    Figure up what your personal tax increase will be if the school board votes for a tax levy of 57.1 cents on both real property and personal property. And ask yourself what “property” it is when we pay it on our electric, phone, long distance, car insurance or any other household bill we receive.

    Dear Editor,

    The massacre in Colorado was a terrible act that was done by a mad man, and it sadly happens too often everywhere in this country, and all over the world, but to blame guns for murders is not the answer.
    I have owned guns nearly all my life, and I know for a fact that guns do not kill people. People kill people.
    It’s the crazed criminal out there that give the lawful people like myself and others that enjoy firearms a bad name.

    Dear Editor,

    The value of our volunteer fire departments was confirmed on Wednesday evening, July 18.
    The response time was phenomenal - estimated at 15 minutes. And, once the “volunteers” arrived, they began work in a highly-professional manner.
    The location of the fire was immediately determined and an action plan was implemented without delay. The “volunteers” worked as a team and stayed until the situation was under control.

    In recognition of the BB&T Lighthouse Project, The Caring Place staff and residents would like to acknowledge the people involved for their tireless work, giving our domestic shelter a facelift with new blinds, storm doors, patio furniture, curtains and bedding. The dedication of those involved to helping others is admirable.

    Dear Editor,

    I’m writing in response to the article in the Sun May 30 publication concerning the collection of fire and rescue dues. 

    I commend and support our fine fire and rescue team, however, I’m opposed to our fees being raised from $25 to $45. 

    In these struggling economic times, when it’s so hard to keep gas in our vehicles, heat and cool our homes and put food on our tables, a $20 increase is going to be hard for some.
