Today's Opinions

  • Tragic loss in track family

You’ve heard it said about things before, but in this case, it’s really true; track and field is like one big family.

My son is a thrower (shot put, hammer) at Georgetown College, which is in the Mid-South Conference, with Campbellsville University and Lindsey Wilson College. He’s in his second year, and my wife and I attend every meet, whether it’s nearby or far away. It’s just what we do.

  • Share the road with motorcycle riders

    Dear Editor,

Since spring has arrived, and wonderful motorcycle weather is here, I’d like to put out some reminders to help make motorcycling safe.

Please do not go out and buy your teenager a crotch rocket (sport/racing bike) or any other kind of bike until he/she takes the Kentucky Motorcycle Rider Education Program. Without proper training, these bikes can be death machines.

  • Reflecting on the Easter story

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ will mean something different to every person that hears and thinks about the story. Here are my own thoughts.

The traits people had then hold true to this day. We constantly look for people that will tell us the “Good News,” but become angry when they tell us the bad. We tend to reject them at that point and search for someone else that has a message more to our liking.

  • A blast from my past

It was about 2:30 last Wednesday afternoon when the phone rang in my office. I answered, asking the caller if I could help them.

“Is this Jeff Moreland?” the lady on the other end asked.

I told her it was, and she followed by asking if I used to live in Irvine, Kentucky.

I said I did, and politely asked with whom I was speaking.

She told me, and I think my heart skipped a beat as I heard her answer. You’ve heard the term “a blast from the past,” well this was certainly one for me.

  • Can you remember this?

There are three surefire signs of getting old.  The first is forgetfulness.  I don’t remember what the other two are.
    Must not have been important.

Anyway, now that I’m a senior citizen, I can tell you that my memory isn’t what it used to be.  If I didn’t then Cindy would.

Unlike myself, Cindy has a photographic memory and never forgets anything.  It’s something that comes in quite handy for her when we have “loud discussions” at home.  Any of you other guys have that problem out there?

  • The future is now!

I was watching TV while pumping gas the other day and … no, that’s what I said. I was watching TV while pumping gas. You’ve probably done it, too.

As I stood in front of the pump and waited for my tank to fill, it dawned on me just how badly we need to be entertained today. We can’t have a single moment without something to keep our attention.

  • Reflecting on girls basketball

    Dear Editor,

  • The handyman

The families of my father and mother are filled with skilled craftsmen. They can do just about anything with their hands.

So here’s my question. How come I didn’t inherit these skills? Maybe I was adopted.

Let’s compare their abilities to mine.
