Today's Opinions

  • Forgetfulness

There are three surefire signs of getting old.  The first is forgetfulness.  I don’t remember what the other two are.

    Must not have been important.

Anyway, now that I’m in the upper part of middle age, I can tell you that my memory isn’t what it use to be.  If I didn’t, then Cindy would.

  • An S. Wiley job interview

Editor’s note: The following is a guest letter by Mark Simms, president of M&J Construction in Springfield. Simms and his company were referenced in a Nov. 25 article by Sun columnist Ken Begley, and he writes the following in reply.

    Dear Mr. Begley,

    Dear Editor,

Please accept this letter as my endorsement for Rep. Jimmy Higdon for State Senate.  I want to encourage everyone in Washington (part of the 54th House District which I represent,) Mercer, Taylor, Marion, and Nelson counties to go out on Dec. 8 and cast your vote for Jimmy Higdon.

  • The Internet Matchmaker

This electronic, microchip-driven world we live in never ceases to amaze me. Electronic gadgets and gizmos that weren’t around a few years ago now seem to be indispensable to most people.  You know what I mean.  We have cell phones, Internet, Facebook, e-mail, texting, computers, pagers, fax machines, and on and on.

  • A well-done Tuna

If you’re looking for entertainment that’s different and will brighten up your day, then come on down to the Opera House in Springfield to see “A Tuna Christmas."

     It’s showing at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20 and 21, then again on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.

  • Readers support Senatorial candidates

    Dear Editor,

Although I am a resident of Marion County and have known Jimmy Higdon for many years, I would like to urge the voters of Washington County to vote for Jodie Haydon in the December 8th special election for State Senator.

  • Breath Easy - November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the month we celebrate the Great American Smokeout. On Nov. 19, many Americans will participate in the Great American Smokeout which is a day that honors people’s efforts to stop smoking - for a day, for weeks, forever. Are you ready?

  • Readers Write: Reader supports Higdon for Senate seat

    Dear Editor,

There is a provision in the “Healthcare” (power grab) bill that would put Planned Parenthood clinics inside your child’s school, according to the American Family Association of Tupelo, Miss.! Isn’t 52,000,000 killed by abortion enough? It’s a mean group that wants to kill the unborn; to saddle the grandchildren with tremendous debt; and to tell grandma to take pain pills instead of having the operation!
