  • Tax money shouldn't buy filth for library

    Do you like to waste your money? Probably not. How about having someone else waste it for you? That would be unthinkable, wouldn’t it?

    These days, when finances in our households as well as our government are in shorter supply than we would like, we need to watch how our money is being spent. Yet with money becoming more limited, there appears to be no limit when it comes to what our tax dollars are buying at the Washington County Public Library.

    The Springfield-Washington County Rescue Squad is inviting you to assist us in money donations in order that we may continue to provide the services offered to our community. This annual event enables us to provide services such as vehicle extrication, assistance to the ambulance service, traffic control at accidents and special events, search and rescues, farm rescues and water rescues. These are just a few of the services that we render to our community. The money raised will be used to ensure that these services will continue to be available.

  • What these eyes have seen

    I’ve got a Christmas column that I’m planning on writing. I’m hoping some of you readers out there might help me out on two problems I have.

    First, I’m looking for a few local residents from Washington County in their 90’s. The project is to ask them a series of questions about changes they’ve seen and experienced in their lives.

    Second, I don’t want the questions to come from me. I want them to come from kindergarten and elementary children.

    Wouldn’t that be interesting?

  • Hurricane? Quick, get the milk and bread!

    There’s one thing I’ve never understood about living in the South. When a crisis like a hurricane or snow storm looms, what’s the first thing we do? Pray? No. Run to the root cellar or basement? Nope.

    We run to the grocery store to buy bread and milk.

    I read the following on MSNBC.com talking about people’s reaction to Hurricane Ike’s sending gas prices to nearly $5 a gallon in Knoxville Saturday.
