  • Economy and elections: too much for one college student

    A couple of weeks ago, the United States was shell-shocked. Wall Street plummeted, leaving many Americans in a state of awe and panic. Likewise, the election of this year is likely to go down in history as the most controversial ever. Both Senators McCain and Obama are showing their true colors when it comes to the economic crisis. They believe that ripping each other’s throats out is going to steady the free-falling economy. A war between the presidential candidates is not what we need.

  • Lessons for life

    St. Dominic Grade School squared off against Washington County Middle School in the third annual Middle School Football Championship game a couple of weeks ago.

    On one side you had the St. Dominic Knights. A school, which had won the first and second championship games and had big winning seasons in each of those years.

    On the other side you had the Washington County Generals, a team that hadn’t had a win in five years.

    Do you like to waste your money? Probably not. How about having someone else waste it for you? That would be unthinkable, wouldn’t it?

    These days, when finances in our households as well as our government are in shorter supply than we would like, we need to watch how our money is being spent. Yet with money becoming more limited, there appears to be no limit when it comes to what our tax dollars are buying at the Washington County Public Library.

    The Springfield-Washington County Rescue Squad is inviting you to assist us in money donations in order that we may continue to provide the services offered to our community. This annual event enables us to provide services such as vehicle extrication, assistance to the ambulance service, traffic control at accidents and special events, search and rescues, farm rescues and water rescues. These are just a few of the services that we render to our community. The money raised will be used to ensure that these services will continue to be available.
