Today's Opinions

  • What these eyes have seen

I’ve got a Christmas column that I’m planning on writing. I’m hoping some of you readers out there might help me out on two problems I have.

First, I’m looking for a few local residents from Washington County in their 90’s. The project is to ask them a series of questions about changes they’ve seen and experienced in their lives.

Second, I don’t want the questions to come from me. I want them to come from kindergarten and elementary children.

    Wouldn’t that be interesting?

    Think about it!

  • Hurricane? Quick, get the milk and bread!

There’s one thing I’ve never understood about living in the South. When a crisis like a hurricane or snow storm looms, what’s the first thing we do? Pray? No. Run to the root cellar or basement? Nope.

We run to the grocery store to buy bread and milk.

I read the following on MSNBC.com talking about people’s reaction to Hurricane Ike’s sending gas prices to nearly $5 a gallon in Knoxville Saturday.

  • Reader wants potholes fixed, sign replaced

    Dear Editor,

How does a taxpayer get assistance from the local “officials” in Washington County, Kentucky?

I have been trying to get two problems resolved. The first for 1 1/2 years, the replacement of a street sign, and the second for six months, the repair of two potholes.

  • Doctor's visit

I stopped off at the doctor’s office the other day. Doc’s always so glad to see me.

“Hey Doc! How’s it going?” I said as he entered the examining room.

It was like he hit an invisible wall when he suddenly looked up. We made eye contact and he shuttered.

Doc suddenly got this pained look on his face. He must suffer from acid reflux or something. He’s always like this every time I come to see him. Poor fellow.

  • Kids, coaches, parents and sports

This is probably the most difficult, but I hope not controversial, articles that I have ever attempted to write.

All juvenile sports programs are difficult to run and frequently lead to clashes between kids, coaches, and parents. By juvenile, I’m talking mainly about grades one through eight. These clashes tend to leave everyone involved with hurt feelings that may take years to heal due to things said in haste at the heat of the moment.

  • A call for action - have your voice heard

You probably don’t know, but Washington County is moving forward in defining the next generation of our school system. What do I mean? The Washington County School Board is in the process of selecting an architectural firm to help define our requirements and needs for our children and grandchildren.

  • Newspaper, education go hand in hand

It’s an obvious combination, and it only makes sense when you think about it.

Newspapers and education are pretty much partners in the community. The goal of the newspaper is to inform and educate its readers about what happens in the community, and we strive to do that each week as we produce The Springfield Sun for our readers.

  • All alone

You know, it’s a really crazy, fast-paced world we live in. It’s so fast paced that we frequently get on each others’ nerves and the resulting stress makes you just want to run away.

You ever feel that way? You ever wish you could be on some deserted island or off in some faraway mountains? Go where no one was there and you had nothing you had to do? If so, then you might enjoy a couple of stories I have and the answer might be surprising.

The Springfield Sun is your source for local news, sports, events and information in Springfield, KY, and the surrounding area.
