The Washington County girls’ tennis team took home the runner-up trophy from the Midland Conference tournament played last Wednesday in Bardstown. The conference includes the same four teams that comprise the district in most other sports, which are Bardstown Bethlehem, Nelson County and WCHS. Nelson County won first place in the girls’ competition.

Jane Goatley and Hollie Reed were second in doubles at the conference tournament.

“Caitlyn Harrod played well and accumulated points to help the team win the runner-up spot,” said coach Steve Schubart.

Both the Commanders and Commanderettes now look toward the regional tournament in Elizabethtown starting May 13. Six Washington County girls and five boys will be playing in the region.

“Patrick Bishop is our most experienced player and plays first singles,” added Schubart. “He is a senior, as is Rob Spaulding, so both of them will be gone after this year. Bob Grider (freshman) and Tim Curtsinger (sophomore) will be the foundation of the boys’ team for the next few years.”

Hoping to build even a more solid foundation, Schubart said he will be offering tennis clinics at Idle Hour Park the first week of June for elementary, middle school and high school players. Those clinics will focus on the fundamentals of the game.
