What Obamacare means for small...

Since being signed into law more than three years ago, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act—better known as Obamacare—has come under both scrutiny and praise by those in federal government, and last Wednesday, business owners in Washington County were able to find out what it means for them.
Ashli Watts, manager of public affairs with the Kentucky Chamber, visited for last week's quarterly Washington County Chamber of Commerce meeting, and she said small businesses across the nation are wondering the same thing.

War hero comes home one last time

Washington County native Samie Burns, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for extreme bravery and risk of life in actual combat with an enemy force during World War II, passed away in Florida recently. Burns, was cremated upon his death, and a service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Springfield on Wednesday, June 12.

The cross earned by Burns is the second-highest award of valor behind the Medal of Honor, and connects to a story that Ken Begley shared in a previous issue of The Sun.

Accident sends three to hospital

Three people were transported to Spring View Hospital in Lebanon last Tuesday after an injury accident at 10:23 a.m. at the intersection of Main St. and US-150.

Samuel  J. Filson of Harrodsburg was traveling south on KY-555 in a 2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer when he collided with Rebecca Bowman’s, of Springfield, 1999 Pontiac Bonneville in the intersection. Bowman had three passengers in the vehicle.

Mike Haydon Memorial Highway

Mike Haydon’s name is known by nearly everyone who calls Springfield home, but the town’s former mayor, who also served as Gov. Steve Beshear’s chief of staff, will now forever be connected to his hometown.

The bypass from US-150 at St. Catharine College to KY-555 that was completed in 2011 was named Mike Haydon Memorial Highway on Saturday, Haydon’s birthday.

Many members of local and state government were in attendance, including Beshear, who said the occasion was bittersweet.

UK is on deck for valedictorian

When valedictorian Maegen Satterly stood amongst the 134 graduating seniors at Washington County High School two weeks ago to speak, she was living out a goal that she set for herself four years prior.

Before she ever accumulated a 4.33 grade-point average, or posted a score of 31 on her ACT, Satterly knew she wanted to be her class’ leading example at the graduation ceremony.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Joined by nearly two dozen Kentucky companies and several trade partners, Governor Steve Beshear is leading an international business trade mission this week to Canada.

With stops in Montreal and Toronto, the first Kentucky Export Initiative (KEI) trade mission seeks to increase commerce between Kentucky and Canada.

Well over 1,000 members of the Commonwealth met on Thursday for the funeral of fallen Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis, yet even more support in Ellis’ memory has come through in recent days with donations to a pair of funds set up to support his family and find his killer.

Ellis was killed by multiple shotgun wounds on the Bluegrass Parkway exit ramp near Bloomfield Road (KY-55) on May 25 in what Kentucky State Police have described as a planned murder. Ellis was ambushed after leaving his vehicle to remove debris that had been placed on the road.
