The Sun selects new editor

The Springfield Sun's search for a new editor has come to an end, and Geoff Hamill, formerly the news director at Allegheny Mountain Radio in West Virginia, took over the position last week. He said he anticipates Washington County being a great fit.

UK is on deck for valedictorian

When valedictorian Maegen Satterly stood amongst the 134 graduating seniors at Washington County High School two weeks ago to speak, she was living out a goal that she set for herself four years prior.

Before she ever accumulated a 4.33 grade-point average, or posted a score of 31 on her ACT, Satterly knew she wanted to be her class’ leading example at the graduation ceremony.

County road closed on US-150

An unnamed road South of US-150 across from Bethlehem Baptist Church was officially closed by county government at Monday's regular scheduled fiscal court meeting.

Property owners John Russell and Sherrell Cornish requested that the road be closed, as it served no purpose to the county, and formerly led to a bridge in the area.

Little League winds down

With the Mets already clinching the 9-10-year-old Little League baseball crown, the Marlins and Orioles battled it out last week for second place.

The Marlins, 2-6 entering the game, topped the O’s, who entered at 3-5, as both teams finished the season at 3-6.

In the 11-12-year-old league, the Royals had already clinched first place, while the Nationals and Reds battled for second place last week. The Reds came out on top, finishing the season at 4-5, while the Nationals fell to 3-7.

On June 6, the anniversary of the D-Day landing at Normandy, author Michael Freeland, World War II veteran, made what he called his last public appearance to talk about the war. This took place at our Washington County Public Library.  I was determined not to miss this event, and I'm glad I did not.

Red Cross to hold dinner

Dear Editor:

The annual meeting of the local chapter of the American Red Cross serving Nelson, Marion and Washington Counties will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013.

Azalea lacebug control

While out last week traveling around I noticed a lot of azaleas in our area with lacebug damage. This isn’t something most people notice until their azaleas are in bad shape, but you may want to take a look at yours. Azalea lacebugs are 1/8” long with light brown bodies. They prefer evergreen varieties but attack deciduous varieties and mountain laurels but will eat all types of azaleas.
