WC baseball hosts banquet, gives out season awards

The Washington County High School baseball team held its postseason banquet on Tuesday, highlighted by senior Thomas Spalding being named the team’s most valuable player for the 2013 season.
Spalding also received the varsity pitching award, while sophomore Wade Moore earned the offensive award.
Senior Will Begley was recognized as the team’s top defender, while this year’s Commander award went to senior Michael Mann.

Tryouts for growing ECTC soccer teams scheduled

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is continuing to build its promising soccer programs for the 2013-2014 academic year.  The ECTC Barons were competitive in men’s soccer last year, winning against such strong teams as Bellarmine, Campbellsville JV, Lindsey Wilson JV, and Southern State Community College (OH).  Led by head coach Alex Molina, they are hoping to build on a very successful first year, with games starting in mid-August. The women’s soccer team, with returning head coach Andre Cooper, will start games in early September.

Young Riders participate at WKU

The 4-H Young Riders completed a successful weekend participating in the District 5 4-H Horse Show, held at the Western Kentucky University Ag Exposition Center in Bowling Green. 4-H members from 12 counties competed in the horse show that qualifies youth to advance to the KY State 4-H Horse Show the first week in July at the state fairgrounds in Louisville.

Survey shows consumers want locally-produced meats

A survey of meat consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee indicated very strong interest and use of locally produced meats. The survey included responses from 2,620 consumers in the region, exploring meat consumption and shopping patterns. Much of the direct meat marketing effort in the area has emphasized product differentiation.

Rose Rosette disease is spreading

If you have roses, most of you know that many of them can be very disease prone, however the knockout roses are very often disease free. Knockouts aren’t totally full proof. They do still get the occasional assault from insects. There is a disease or more specifically a virus that has become more common in roses over the last several years and it attacks ALL roses! The disease is called rose rosette and as in all plant viruses there is no cure.
