Softball falls with top seed on the line, set to host Nelson Co. in district opener

The Commanderette softball team (9-11) had a pair of games rained out last week—at home against Fort Knox on Friday and at Elizabethtown on Saturday—but the game they did get in had major significance.

Unfortunately for the Commanderettes, they came up on the wrong side of a 12-1 result at the hands of Bethlehem (15-12) with the 19th District one seed on the line.

Patriots take all-conference honors

In addition to the honors received in softball (see related article, this issue), the spring sports programs at St. Catharine College had numerous athletes who earned All-Conference honors.

Four Patriot golfers and three track and field athletes were recognized for academic achievement by being named to the Academic All-Mid-South Conference team. A student/athlete must have at least a 3.25 grade point average and a minimum of sophomore academic status to earn the award.

SCC bball camp

The St. Catharine College women’s basketball program will be hosting two camps in late May for boys and girls aged 5-18. The first camp for ages 5-11 will be held May 28 and 29 and the camp for ages 12-18 will be held May 30 and 31. Each camp runs from 9:00 to noon each day. Campers may be dropped off at 8:00 each day.

SCC golf lessons

If you want to improve your golf game, and help support the St. Catharine College golf program at the same time, you have that opportunity again this spring. Again, St. Catharine College head coach Joan Rizer will be offering lessons at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood. All proceeds go to the Patriots men’s and women’s golf programs.

The lessons are offered each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Call Coach Rizer at 502 507-4777 to set up a time for the lessons.

Fiscal court meets

Washington County fiscal court held a regular session on Monday, and officials handled several financial matters and reflected on how recent work has been a success through daunting spring weather.

“We have had two significant rains since Grundy Home Road bridge has been open and it hasn’t been closed either time,” said Washington County Judge-Executive John Settles of the bridge that opened in March. “As you all know, it was closed before we got it opened to the public because it flooded.”

No major surprises in budget

County officials met last month to discuss the budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year, and while it appears there will be alterations from last year’s budget, major changes shouldn’t be expected when the spending plan is finalized this summer.

Less than two weeks after the first reading of the proposed budget, Washington County Judge-Executive John Settles, the magistrates and other officials are still early in the process with plenty of time to make changes, but the foundation for the upcoming budget has been set.

4-H talent show rescheduled for Monday

The 4-H Talent Show has been rescheduled for Monday, May 13 at 6:15 p.m. at the Mackville Community Center. The public is invited to attend the event, which will feature 4-H members in vocal, instrumental, physical skills and theatrical categories. There is an admission price. Top acts will advance to the Kentucky State Fair to perform in Cloverville in August.

Before you petition heaven’s city council for a privacy fence or request that your bad neighbor be confined to the eternal promised land’s back forty, make sure you yourself aren’t unwittingly the neighbor from hell who somehow slipped under the pearly gates unnoticed while St. Peter was distracted by a game of heavenly baseball.
