Madox Roberts letters needed for book

Washington Countians are being called on to help breathe life into the work of the area’s most celebrated author, and all they have to do is take a look around the attic.
Bill Slavick, a retired English professor who spent most of his career at the University of Southern Maine, has put in a call for letters to complete his book, “Roberts’ Letters from the Little Country.”

SCC bball camp

The St. Catharine College women’s basketball program will be hosting two camps in late May for boys and girls aged 5-18. The first camp for ages 5-11 will be held May 28 and 29 and the camp for ages 12-18 will be held May 30 and 31. Each camp runs from 9:00 to noon each day. Campers may be dropped off at 8:00 each day.

SCC commencement: 159 earn diplomas

It was a historic year for St. Catharine College, as 159 students received diplomas on May 11 during the 81st commencement ceremony at the college.

This year two pioneer groups crossed the stage. One was a group of 11 students from Washington County High School that received an Associate of Arts from the college before they received their high school diplomas the following weekend. The group was part of the inaugural Commander College class, which is a group of students who have been taking courses at St. Catharine.

SCC golf lessons

If you want to improve your golf game, and help support the St. Catharine College golf program at the same time, you have that opportunity again this spring. Again, St. Catharine College head coach Joan Rizer will be offering lessons at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood. All proceeds go to the Patriots men’s and women’s golf programs.

The lessons are offered each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Call Coach Rizer at 502 507-4777 to set up a time for the lessons.

Fiscal court meets

Washington County fiscal court held a regular session on Monday, and officials handled several financial matters and reflected on how recent work has been a success through daunting spring weather.

“We have had two significant rains since Grundy Home Road bridge has been open and it hasn’t been closed either time,” said Washington County Judge-Executive John Settles of the bridge that opened in March. “As you all know, it was closed before we got it opened to the public because it flooded.”

Woods to host skydiving fundraiser

Troy Woods made a name for himself in Washington County last summer when he broke the state record for skydive jumps in a single day (80) at Arnold’s Airport in Springfield. Woods will be back on June 1 with a different mission, but it will be a day filled with skydiving once again.

Softball falls with top seed on the line, set to host Nelson Co. in district opener

The Commanderette softball team (9-11) had a pair of games rained out last week—at home against Fort Knox on Friday and at Elizabethtown on Saturday—but the game they did get in had major significance.

Unfortunately for the Commanderettes, they came up on the wrong side of a 12-1 result at the hands of Bethlehem (15-12) with the 19th District one seed on the line.

Records set by Bat Pats

The St. Catharine College baseball team won 37 games this season, tied for the most victories since the Patriots joined the NAIA in 2009. Along the way, head coach Luther Bramblett picked up his 400th career victory with the Bat Pats.

In addition to the team milestones reached, there were also individual players who entered the SCC record books. New career marks were set in two categories, and single season records were also rewritten.

Goldey leads way for SCC

In looking at final statistics from the Mid-South Conference softball season, the name of Hagan Goldey appears in the top six in nearly every offensive category. The senior shortstop from Lancaster, in addition to making the first team all-conference, also joined four other Patriots on the Academic All-Mid South Conference team.
