A year of firsts for St....

The year of athletics at St. Catharine College that just ended will not be considered as the best showing since the Patriot programs joined the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference in 2008. But there were some noteworthy accomplishments, both by individuals and teams, that will be recorded as “firsts” in the athletic annals of the institution.

Doig steps down as SCC athletic...

After nearly five years as the athletic director at St. Catharine College, Mike Doig’s resignation was announced last week by the college’s President, William D. Huston.

Royals, Mets take Little League...

The Royals clinched the 11-12-year-old Little League baseball title at Idle Hour Park last week, while the Mets locked up a championship in the 9-10-year-old league on Monday.

The Royals (7-2) have a game left on the schedule, but have already run away with the league title, holding a three-and-a-half-game lead over the Reds, and a four-game advantage over the Nationals.

The Mets (6-3) clinched first place with a 1-0 win over the Orioles, who sit one game back. The Marlins round out the 9-10-year-old league three-and-a-half games behind the Mets.

Survey shows consumers want...

A survey of meat consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee indicated very strong interest and use of locally produced meats. The survey included responses from 2,620 consumers in the region, exploring meat consumption and shopping patterns. Much of the direct meat marketing effort in the area has emphasized product differentiation.

WC baseball hosts banquet, gives...

The Washington County High School baseball team held its postseason banquet on Tuesday, highlighted by senior Thomas Spalding being named the team’s most valuable player for the 2013 season.
Spalding also received the varsity pitching award, while sophomore Wade Moore earned the offensive award.
Senior Will Begley was recognized as the team’s top defender, while this year’s Commander award went to senior Michael Mann.

Smalley, Keene head to all-star...

Washington County basketball will have a pair of representatives on the sidelines when the 5th Region and 6th region girls’ all-stars meet up on July 13.

Commanderettes Head Coach Bernard Smalley will coach the 5th Region squad, while Chris Stallings of Bullitt East is in charge of the 6th Region group.

Also making the trip will be Washington County senior-to-be Jennifer Keene, who averaged 10.7 points and 8.8 rebounds as a junior last season, while shooting 50.9 percent from the field.

Azalea lacebug control

While out last week traveling around I noticed a lot of azaleas in our area with lacebug damage. This isn’t something most people notice until their azaleas are in bad shape, but you may want to take a look at yours. Azalea lacebugs are 1/8” long with light brown bodies. They prefer evergreen varieties but attack deciduous varieties and mountain laurels but will eat all types of azaleas.
