St. Catharine College

  • Patriots’ conference season opens Thursday

In the short time that the St. Catharine College Patriots have been in the Mid-South Conference, now in their third year, a few rivalries with teams in close proximity have already developed. None of the conference games provide more buzz, however, than when the name Georgetown comes up on the schedule.

  • St. Catharine pounds Pioneers, 76-49

Officially it is listed as an exhibition game on the St. Catharine schedule. But the outcome of Saturday’s game at Tusculum College (Tennessee) was huge for J.T. Burton’s team. As the Patriots prepare for the beginning of the Mid-South Conference schedule this week (see related story), they received a real boost with a 76-49 win over the Pioneers who are a NCAA Division II team.

Of course every coach will say that their team must “take it one game at a time.” And that coach-talk is something that players may or may not buy into.

  • Patriots finish tournament 1-1

Just as every Mid-South Conference team, St. Catharine College views the Georgetown Tigers as the team to beat each year. And this year, after meeting them last weekend in an early season tournament, J.T. Burton’s team will have three chances to upend the league’s perennial heavyweight.
Make that two chances now, as Burton’s bunch dropped a 78-66 decision at Georgetown Friday in the first round of the Andrew Elswick Memorial Tournament. The Patriots, however, did make amends on Saturday with an 81-50 rout of Southern University-New Orleans.

Both St. Catharine College soccer teams hit the road Saturday for play in the Mid-South Conference tournament. And both the men and women saw their seasons come to a disappointing end with lopsided losses.
