    It is not a game film that St. Catharine College coach J.T. Burton will want to show future teams about playing good basketball. But after giving up a 22-point second-half lead and committing 29 turnovers, the Patriots survived to beat visiting Bluefield College 89-86 in overtime in Mid-South Conference action Thursday.

    The '04-05 Comm-anderettes won 18 games on their way to the 5th Region championship and a berth in the Houchens Industries/KHSAA girls' sweet sixteen basketball tournament.

    St. Catharine senior Janae Howard is the Mid-South Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.

    The MSC weekly honor is Howard’s first this season and of her career.

    Howard averaged 21.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last week while leading the Patriots to home wins over UVa.-Wise and Pikeville.

    After some early-season losses, Patriots’ Head Coach Lena Bramblett said that she was more concerned with how her team would be playing in February.  And “how” her team is playing has to be just what the St. Catharine mentor was hoping for as her team has won three of its last four games, including two home Mid-South Conference victories last week.

    The St. Catharine College Patriots continued their late-season momentum with two victories at home last week. After defeating the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise 71-63 Thursday they topped the nation’s No. 7 team with a 93-90 win against Pikeville on Saturday.

  • Turner fourth member of 1,500-...

    Washington County girls’ basketball senior Kenya Turner moved another step up the all-time scoring list with 12 points in last Tuesday’s win against Campbellsville, and her next achievement is in sight.

    The 6-3 center surpassed the 1,500-point mark last week, becoming just the fourth Commanderette in school history reach the milestone. Turner entered the season as the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer, but currently sits fourth on the list after passing Jane Goatley earlier in the season.
