  • Pitching strong, bats lacking...

The St. Catharine College baseball team opened the 2013 season last weekend in Thomasville, Ga. with warm weather, but the bats stayed cold as the Kentucky weather back home. The Patriots won the opener 1-0, but then lost three straight games to the Thomas University Night Hawks 5-4, 2-1 and 1-0 to start the season 1-3.

The St. Catharine College women remained in fifth place in the Mid-South Conference after splitting a pair of games at home last week. After beating the University of the Cumberlands 74-67 on Thursday, Lena Bramblett’s team fell 60-54 on Saturday to the No. 6 Bulldogs of Cumberland University (Tenn.).

  • Work left to do

It’s hard to believe it’s already that time, but the high school basketball regular season will be coming to a close in 10 days with the 19th District tournament getting underway just two days later.

As the Commanders and Commanderettes hit the final stretch and enter their final regular season district game on Friday at home against Thomas Nelson, one Washington County team knows exactly where they stand heading into the tournament, while the other will have plenty to play for this weekend.

  • Streaking Patriots head into the...

The St. Catharine College men had only won back to back games once this year before traveling to Rio Grande two weeks ago. That trip resulted in a win that started the Patriots’ current four game Mid-South Conference winning streak, two of those victories coming against nationally ranked opponents.

Following the Rio Grande win, J.T. Burton’s team won at No. 24 Shawnee State. Then last week they topped No. 22 University of the Cumberlands and unranked Cumberland University, both games contested at home.

  • Bat Pats prepare for season...

Years ago the St. Catharine College Patriots’ baseball team took on the sobriquet of Bat Pats. And while that would conjure up images of offensive prowess, SC head coach Luther Bramblett is counting on strengths in other areas to boost his team in the 2013 campaign that begins Friday (Feb. 1).

“We should be better defensively than last year,” said Bramblett who will take a career record of 394-175 into his 12th season at St. Catharine. “We are stronger on the mound also, and will have better team speed than last season.”
