While the weather outside is anything other than spring-like, the Washington County Commanderette softball team was busy last week holding tryouts for the upcoming season. Veteran players, as well as young hopefuls, spent last Wednesday afternoon working on fielding, throwing and hitting.

In basketball, sometimes the basket seems like it’s as wide as a hula hoop, and other times, it seems as small as a soup can. Last Wednesday night against LaRue County, the shots were there for the Commanders, they just weren’t falling through as WC fell 48-44 to the Hawks.

“We just didn’t get the hustle plays, the 50-50 balls in the final minutes and that was the difference.”

Such was the summation of St. Catharine College head coach J.T. Burton after his team lost a tough 67-64 decision Saturday to the visiting Campbellsville Tigers. Even with the bounces going against them late, the Patriots had a shot to tie in the final seconds but Arthur Latham’s 3-point attempt was just off the mark.

    SCC Sports Information

Based on the first round of conference games, St. Catharine College head coach Lena Bramblett felt her Patriots had a good chance of winning one of two home games last week. Coming in Thursday was a West Virginia Tech team, winless in the Mid-South, who SCC beat 68-45 earlier this season. And Saturday the Patriots would host Pikeville who throttled them by 31 points in the first meeting.

When your team is up against the top-ranked team in the state, there’s really nothing you can do except hold on for the ride. That was the situation the Washington County Commanderettes found themselves in last Friday as they traveled to Lebanon to face the 26-1 Lady Knights of Marion County.

A string of runs by Marion in the first quarter set the pace of the game as the Lady Knights led 25-6 after the first quarter.

The Commanderettes were outpaced 14-12 in the second as MC took a 39-18 lead into the break.

    A word from our sponsors

Sunday signaled the official start of NASCAR season with the Daytona 500. I do enjoy watching a few races during the year, but I don’t follow the sport like I used to, and that’s partly because the season is so long now. It seems like they just wrapped up last season!

The Washington County Commanders got the early lead against Marion County Friday night in Lebanon, but they struggled from the outside and the Knights were able to take the lead and earn the win, as the Commanders fell 49-39.

“We were 1-for-23 from the three-point line,” said head coach Russell Burkhead. “That’s not going to win you many ball games.”

The Commanders took an 8-7 lead as the first quarter ended. Marion came back in the second, outscoring WC 10-6 to lead 17-14 at the half.

Usually, the St. Catharine mens’ basketball team is used to racking up lots of baskets on the hardwood. But last Thursday, the Patriots took time to stuff a different kind of basket - commodity baskets given out by Washington County Community Action.

Head coach J.T. Burton and his team braved the chilly weather to warm the hearts and tummies of those in need.
