  • New faces on the Commander...

    The Washington County football Commanders have been shaping up for the 2010 season by bulking up on the field and making a few changes within the coaching staff.

    Gone from seasons past are assistant coaches Tim Messer and Jeff Doig. Messer has assumed more of an administrative role within the high school, while Doig moved out-of-state to take a new job.

    An awards night for Washington County summer youth leagues will be held July 26 at Idle Hour Park starting at 6 p.m.

  • Former Patriot part of Cliff Lee...

    SCC Sports Information

    Former St. Catharine College right-hander Josh Lueke was traded to the Seattle Mariners from the Texas Rangers in the Cliff Lee deal last week.  Lueke was an NJCAA All-American pitcher for the Patriots in 2006 and signed with Northern Kentucky University following that year.  He was a 16th round pick of the Rangers in 2007.  Lueke had a career 1.01 ERA for SCC and won 14 games with 141 Ks in 134 innings in two seasons at St. Catharine (2005-2006).

  • Lincoln Homestead Men's...

    The Lincoln Homestead Men’s Club played their annual President’s Cup match against the Lebanon Country Club this past weekend. The teams consisted of 13 players from each course. They played four nine-hole matches in Ryder Cup style match play. The Lincoln Men’s Club needed to win 15.5 out of 30 possible points to regain the cup that was lost last year to Lebanon in a landslide defeat.

    This year, Captains Joe B. Yates and Kurt Blandford assembled a team to go up against a strong Lebanon squad.

    When the St. Catharine Patriot baseball team takes the field next season, a familiar face will be among those at Edelen-Haydon Field. Washington County graduate Joe Joe Simms is among the latest crop of players that have committed to playing for head coach Luther Bramblett’s Bat Pats.

  • YMCA Basketball League

    The Wilderness Trace Family YMCA and Mercer County Youth Sports League are joining together to establish a fall basketball league.

    This league, for ages 7-18, will play games in the Central KY Youth Basketball Conference with Jessamine and Garrard counties.

    Registration starts July 31 and the deadline to sign up is Aug. 20. The season will start on Sept. 11.

  • Free Golf for Juniors 18 and...

    From July 6 - 31, any player age 18 or under may play a free round and hit balls free on the driving range at any Kentucky State Park golf course when accompanied by a paying adult. Carts are not included.

    If you follow sports with any regularity, then you know that much speculation has been surrounding where free agent Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James would end up. After all of the media hype, James signed with the Miami Heat.

    While “King James” may be a talented athlete, and his status as the premiere player in the NBA commands attention, I think I speak for many of us who just want to say, ‘So what?’

    The Washington County Little League baseball all-stars stuggled in the early going in the District 5 Tournament. But both teams fought their way to their respective title games during the past week, with the 9-10-year-olds facing Marion County, and the 11-12s squaring off against Campbellsville.

  • St. Catharine College softball...

    St. Catharine College and head coach Holly Smith will host the second softball camp of the summer from July 19-22. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The camp will cover basic skills, fundamentals of defense at each position and hitting instruction. The camp is for players of all ages.

    Instructing at the camp will be Coach Smith and players from the Patriot team who this year finished in the final four in their first Mid-South Conference tournament.
