    St. Catharine College basketball is back in action this week as both the men and women embark on the second half of the schedule, a schedule that will be mostly games in the Mid-South Conference. But before the conference begins on Jan. 15 with a home doubleheader against West Virginia Tech, both the men and women will have some tune-up games.

  • WC sixth grade basketball team...

    The Washington County sixth grade basketball team started league play in Nelson County in impressive fashion with victories over Boston and LaRue County. Washington County Head Coach Tim Graves believes his team’s early success is a combination of hard work and dedication in practice which has carried over to the games. The majority of these players have played on the middle school level this season and Graves believes that has helped as well.

    With a 74-69 win at Berea College on Friday, the St. Catharine women now own a 10-8 record and a modest two-game winning streak – and head coach Lena Bramblett was not a bit happy about it.

    “We practiced when we got back Friday night. That is how disappointed I was with our performance,” said Bramblett.

  • Commanders set for battles

    It can’t be easy for an army to prepare for battle knowing that they will be without their most effective weapon. The Washington County Commanders are facing four district contests in the next 10 days, and they must fight for every win with their leading scorer and rebounder, John Hamilton, out for six weeks with bone contusions in his left knee.

    In their second district contest of the season, the 2-8 Washington County Commanders hosted the 7-4 Bardstown Tigers Tuesday night. Any momentum Washington County may have had coming off a 2-2 performance in the Marion County Christmas Tournament was long gone as the Tigers defeated the Commanders 76-53 to improve to 2-0 in district play while WC falls to 0-2 in district, 2-9 overall.

  • Patriots fall at Cumberland 73-55

    J.T. Burton had a built-in excuse for the way his team started Monday’s game at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. The Patriots had not played a game in 17 days, and it showed in their lethargic start en route to a 73-55 loss to the #21 Bulldogs.

    But Burton, whose team fell to 2-13, wouldn’t use the layoff as a factor in the loss. “No, we just didn’t play defense like we need to in order to win games,” he said. “We can’t let teams come out and shoot 57 percent and expect to win.”

  • St. Dominic Knights lose 42-13...

    The St. Dominic Knights traveled to Bardstown Saturday afternoon to face off against Elizabethtown. It was a tough game for the Knights as E-Town got off to an 8-0 lead to finish the first quarter and St. D was down 21-2 at the half.

    The E-Town offense was too much for the Knights as they hit several three-pointers and pulled away in the third quarter to take a 35-8 lead in the final six minutes.
