The thrill of the hunt

I send my girlfriend Cindy a copy of The Springfield Sun each week, and not too long ago, she was flipping through the sports pages and noticed a collection of dead deer photos featuring kids who had shot each deer.

It was the third loss in as many games for the Washington County Commanders as they fell 67-40 to North Bullitt on the road Saturday night after opening the 2008-09 season at home with an 86-59 loss against Taylor County on Dec. 2 and a 73-58 loss to Madison Southern at Berea College on Thursday night.

The Commanders’ lack of size is going to be a big hurdle to overcome this season, a fact that became all too clear as WC opened the season against Taylor County.

The St. Catharine College Patriots dropped two games last weekend at the Jim Reid Classic played at Georgetown College. On Friday, J.T. Burton’s team lost a 73-59 decision to Aquinas College (Michigan) and Saturday they fell 81-63 to Edward Waters College (Florida). The two setbacks give the Patriots a 1-12 slate with one game remaining in the first semester schedule.

Saturday’s basketball game between the St. Catharine College Patriots and the visiting University of Rio Grande is not one that either coach will want to use as a textbook example of shooting proficiency. St. Catharine shot 26 percent from the field while Rio Grande found the mark just 30 percent of the time.

But in the end the Red Storm prevailed 56-51 after seeing an 18-point second half lead completely disappear. The win gave Rio Grande a 5-3 record while the Patriots evened their record at 6-6.
