  • Commanderettes will rely on...

    For the Washington County Commanderette basketball team, it all comes down to the fundamentals. Head coach Bernard Smalley has been working the girls hard in preparation for the upcoming season. This will be Smalley’s second year as head coach, and he’s looking to improve on the 8-18 record from last year.

    “We have a lot of quickness this year,” said Smalley. “I have a lot of kids who have potential.”

    Although the season’s win/loss ratio didn’t reflect it, it was actually a very productive year for the Washington County football team. Despite their 4-7 record, the Commanders were one of the top producing offenses in Kentucky 2A football.

  • Patriots lose at Lambuth 84-61

    The St. Catharine College Patriots, 0-5, dropped the first game of the season to Lambuth 85-77 due to a big disparity in rebounding. Monday night J.T. Burton’s team traveled to Jackson, Tennessee with a chance to improve their board work and redeem the season opening setback.

  • Hurst inks offer with SCC golf

    Jordan Hurst said he considered other options when choosing where he would play his collegiate golf. But the decision was made easy for the Washington County High School senior when St. Catharine College coach Joan Rizer came calling.

    “The first offer I got was from St. Catharine and I didn’t see turning down an opportunity when it is handed to me,” said Hurst. “I like the idea of being able to play close to home and St. Catharine also has the program (surgical tech) that I want to major in.”

  • Gehler makes honorable mention...

    It was doubtful that Samantha Gehler would make much impact on the St. Catharine College volleyball season after suffering a high ankle sprain at the outset of the Patriots’ schedule. But, even though that injury sidelined the 5-9 freshman for nearly one-third of the season, Gehler was able to contribute in a big way once she hit the court.

    The Washington County football season came to an end Friday night in Greensburg as the Commanders fell 52-24 to Green County in the first round of district playoffs. The Commanders finish the year with a 4-7 record.

  • Lady Patriots take one of two

    The St. Catharine College women’s basketball team didn’t really have to travel as far as some might think to play at the University of Rio Grande last weekend. The tournament was not in the southwest U.S. but instead in southeast Ohio. But when the Lady Patriots emerged with a third place finish, head coach Lena Bramblett mostly gave her team a “muy bueno”.

  • Volleyball completes season of...

    The St. Catharine College volleyball team learned the hard way how things are when the competition level moves up a notch. Juanita Mangan’s Patriots playing in the NAIA for the first time ended the 2008 campaign with a 2-39 record.

    “The conference (Mid-South) was tough enough but we also had a very difficult schedule outside the conference,” said Mangan. “But we have no seniors on the team and I expect all of them to be back next season. Now they know what to expect from this level of competition.”
