The Washington County Commanders finished the regular season at home on Friday night with a decisive 45-7 thumping of Spencer County. WC finishes the season at 4-6 and now prepares for the second season with a first-round playoff game at Green County on Friday night.

The Commander offense was firing on all cylinders as it has all year, but if there was ever a time for the WC defense to step up and have a great game, it was now – and that’s just what they did.

The St. Catharine College women’s basketball opener against Berea on Saturday drew a good number of fans. And those fans will surely be back to see more this season after the game they were treated to in a 104-102 SCC win.

“Can you believe that?” was the phrase oft repeated by Patriots’ coach Lena Bramblett after her team rescued the win form the jaws of defeat in the closing minute. “That was unbelievable,” Bramblett added.

St. Catharine College’s Lena Bramblett opened her sixth season as head coach of the Lady Patriots when Berea College visited Saturday (see related story). And when the new season tipped off, Bramblett and her squad found themselves in uncharted territory as they transition from junior college basketball to the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference.

Last Thursday the visiting Campbellsville Eagles came to St. Catharine for a soccer doubleheader and left with two shutouts against the Patriots. The SCC women dropped a 4-0 decision in the opening game and the men lost 5-0 in the nightcap.

The Tigers, 15-3 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-South Conference, scored two goals in the first three minutes and were able to dominate possession in the shutout. The Patriots fell to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
