  • WC girls open district schedule

    The Washington County Commanderettes dropped two straight district contests last week, losing 68-35 to Nelson County last Tuesday, and 55-46 to Bethlehem. With his squad now 0-2 in district play, head coach Bernard Smalley just wants to stay out of the fourth seed come district tournament time.

    Following a 68-59 win over Boyle County last week, the Commanderettes visited Garrard County, where they lost 72-49. But in spite of that loss, the Commanderettes had bigger fish to fry last Friday in the top-ranked Marion County Lady Knights.

    Washington County head girls’ basketball coach Bernard Smalley knew the odds were stacked against his squad. Although they lost 73-27 to the Lady Knights, Smalley said he saw a lot a positive things during that game.

  • WC starts district play tonight...

    The Washington County Commanders and Commanderettes will be on the road tonight to Bardstown as they play their first district match-ups of the season against Nelson County.

    The Commanders (0-4) start off the double-header at 6 p.m. against the Cardinals (3-1), while the Commanderettes (1-3) play the late game against the Lady Cards (3-1).

    Both games will be broadcast on 102.7 WYSB-FM with pre-game hitting the air around 5:55 p.m.

    Arthur Latham averaged a double-double last year for the St. Catharine College Patriots with 21 points and 11 rebounds a game. But with only one semester of eligibility remaining, the Patriots chose to save the Radcliff, Ky., native’s talents for this season’s second semester when the Mid-South Conference schedule begins.

  • Rebound record for Turner

    WC freshman center Kenya Turner set a school record on Dec. 7 when she pulled down 29 rebounds against Boyle County.

    Turner’s 17 offensive and 12 defensive rebounds broke the previous record of 25, set by Patrice Keene, which she had held for more than 20 years.

    Lena Bramblett’s St. Catharine College women’s team avenged a season-opening loss against Midway by beating the visiting Eagles 71-61 last Tuesday. But the Patriots dropped two tough decisions last weekend at the Sport One Classic at Indiana Tech to fall to 5-7 for the season.

    Washington County boys’ head basketball coach Russell Burkhead knows that every game is a battle. But sometimes you run across a game that is more like an all-out war, especially when your team is 0-3 out of the gate.

    Add to the mix the fact that the opponent for that game is Marion County, and you have the ingredients for a classic match-up.

    “This is a heated rivalry that has been going on as long as this school has been around,” Burkhead said before the game.

    The Washington County Commander and Commanderette basketball teams play host to Marion County tonight, starting with the boys' game at 6 p.m., to be followed by the girls' game.

    Things looked to be going all St. Catharine’s way last Tuesday in New Albany when J. T. Burton’s Patriots took on the Grenadiers of IU-Southeast. Shooting 50 percent the first half to the home team’s 29 percent, the lead stood at 36-18 in favor of Burton’s bunch.
