  • WCHS Powder Puff Football Game

    Washington County High School will play its annual powder puff football game Thursday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Bennett R. Lewis Field.

    The seniors and freshmen will team up against the juniors and sophomores in a game of flag football.

    There will be concessions available and all proceeds go toward the WCHS library.

    The Commander coaching staff will serve as the referees, while members of the football team will coach. Freshman football players will entertain the crowd dressed as cheerleaders.

    The St. Catharine College volleyball team traveled to McKendree University (Lebanon, Illinois) last week for an invitational tournament against a strong field. Adam Stevenson’s Patriots, still without leading hitter Jacky Toruno, were able to claim one victory in the four matches.

    Against the host McKendree team Friday, 12-5, the Patriots lost in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-13). Friday’s second match was against Peru State (Nebraska) who also won in straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-9). Peru State improved to 9-5.

    After the St. Catharine soccer men and women swept Spalding University at home last Wednesday, they then were swept in a Mid-South Conference doubleheader at Shawnee Stated on Saturday.


    In Wednesday’s contest against the visiting Eagles (0-5), St. Catharine took a 3-0 lead at halftime, survived a Spalding surge that cut the advantage to 3-2, the pulled away for a 5-2 win.

  • Commanders shut out Marion Co.,...

    In the latest chapter of Washington County vs. Marion County football, the Commanders came out on top Friday night by a foot - the foot of WC senior kicker Seth Mattingly, that is. In what turned out to be a defensive showdown, Mattingly’s field goal late in the third quarter proved to be the game-winner as the Commanders held the Knights scoreless for 48 minutes to earn the 3-0 win and improve to 5-0 on the season. Many people were not giving Washington County much of a chance, but just try telling the Commanders.

    The St. Catharine College golf teams competed last week in the Mid-South Conference fall golf tournaments. The men played at Dale Hollow while the women played at The Pine in Columbia, Ky.

    The Patriot men, playing Monday and Tuesday, were in third place among the 10-team field after the first day, but had to settle for a sixth place finish.

    Aaron Darby led the Patriots with a 36-hole total of 148 (72-76). Adam Nolte had a 151 (77-74), Todd Yelton a 155 (74-81), Alex Carey a 161 (78-83) and Nick Patterson a 163 (77-86).

    Just when you thought you had witnessed the play of the game Friday night between Washington County and Lincoln County, another key Commander gem would grab your attention. But one play in particular is responsible for Washington County beating the Patriots - the blocked extra point attempt by WC’s Markus Reardon. His block preserved a 17-16 Commander lead which proved to be the final, and improved Washington County’s record to 4-0 on the year.

    The third season of Blake Hoppes Youth League Football got into full swing on Sunday with four games. The league has grown over the past three years into a full-fledged league encompassing Springfield, Lebanon and Campbellsville. The league now has a home field behind the board of education complete with new goal posts, scoreboard and concession trailer. And from the turnout for each game, it seems the league has plenty of support from Washington County and the surrounding communities.

    The Washington County boys’ golf team has been chugging along with several recent matches.

    Green County

    On Sept. 9, the Commanders visited Green County and came away with a 163-167 win over the Dragons.

    Chris Spalding shot a 38, followed by Travis Smith at 39, Blake Smith at 42 and Chase Spalding with a 44.

  • Patriot soccer sweeps Pikeville...

    The Mid-South Conference is regarded annually as one of the best, if not the best, NAIA conferences in the nation when it comes to soccer. Thus, when your team can get a conference victory it has to be cherished.

    And a victory is what the St. Catharine College men and women recorded at home Saturday against Pikeville in the first conference game of the season. Paul Patton’s women opened the action with a 2-1 win and Tim Wolz’s guys finished the day with a 4-0 conquest of the Bears.

  • SCC Basketball Tip-Off Banquet

    The St. Catharine College mens’ basketball team will hold a tip-off banquet at Mordecai’s On Main in Springfield, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.

    Morehead State University coach Donnie Tyndall will be the guest speaker.

    As head coach at St. Catharine in 1996-97, Tyndall led the Patriots to their only appearance in the National Junior College Tournament. Current Patriot head coach, J.T. Burton was a guard on that national tournament team.
