    Before entering her fourth season as volleyball coach at St. Catharine College, Juanita Mangan had one priority over the summer. That main order of business was to find a setter to run the new offense the Patriots will employ. That mission was accomplished but it wasn’t the only productive part of Mangan’s summer.

    The time for all the talk, all the second-guessing and all the pre-season speculation is over. This Friday night, the Washington County Commanders will step onto the field for their season opener against Shawnee in Louisville, and this time it counts.

    The Commanders have spent the past few weeks preparing for this moment, with their intra-squad blue/gold scrimmage on August 7 and a game simulation scrimmage against North Oldham last Friday.

    The Washington County Commander football team opens the 2009 season tonight with a road game against Shawnee in Louisville.

    Senior Michael Gash will be the starting quarterback as the Commanders take the field with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

    While many things change at breakneck speed these days, some things fortunately stay the same year after year. One of those constants is the quality of the St. Catharine College Celebrity Golf Classic, held the second Saturday of August each year.

  • Blake Hoppes Youth Football

    Sign-ups for the Blake Hoppes Youth Football League will take place Friday, Aug. 14 from 6-8 p.m., and on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Washington County High School weight room.

    Children grades K-6 are eligible and all players must sign up even if they played last season.

    The countdown is on until the start of the 2009 Washington County football season. Head coach Mark Perry and his staff are using this time to see where they stand and make any neccessary adjustments. The team played its annual intra-squad blue/gold scrimmage last Friday as a way to prepare for the upcoming schedule.

    The Washington County Commanderettes lost their first scrimmage match last Tuesday, falling to Taylor County 28-26, 25-7, 25-20.

    After starting the season with a five-stroke loss (166-171) to Marion County last Thursday, the Washington County boys’ golf team got its first win Monday with a seven-stroke win (165-172) over Bardstown.

    WC’s Chris Spalding shot a low round of 39, but the Spalding scoring-spree didn’t end there as Aaron Spalding shot a 40, Chase Spalding shot a 42, and Matthew Spalding shot a 44.

    The 2009 Washington County Commanderette volleyball team is shaping up to be a competitive force this year. In addition to a returning core of veterans and adding some young prospects to the squad, the team also has an intimidating force in 6’ 4” junior middle hitter Ange Umulisa.

    The Commanderettes finished with a 15-17 record last year. After going 14-15 in the regular season, WC went 1-1 in district play and lost in the first round of the regional tournament.
