  • St. Catharine College softball...

    St. Catharine College and head coach Holly Smith will host the second softball camp of the summer from July 19-22. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The camp will cover basic skills, fundamentals of defense at each position and hitting instruction. The camp is for players of all ages.

    Instructing at the camp will be Coach Smith and players from the Patriot team who this year finished in the final four in their first Mid-South Conference tournament.

  • WCHS Girls Volleyball Tryouts

    The Washington County High School volleyball team will be conducting tryouts on July 15 & 16 from 3-5 p.m. in the high school gym for any girl who will be attending WCHS this year.     The Washington County all-star softball teams started District 5 tournament play in Lebanon by facing off with teams from South Hardin. The 11-12-year-olds struggled as they fell 18-0 in three innings, but the 9-10-year-olds built an early lead, and despite a late charge from South Hardin, they hung on for a 15-12 win.

    “Total commitment, no excuses” - that’s the philosophy of new Washington County head volleyball coach Curt Scifres, who is excited to take the reigns of the Commanderettes and, as he said, hopefully put a lot of wins on the board.

  • Big-league success is not always...

    Success can rarely be predicted in sports, and anyone who follows baseball, basketball or football on the professional level knows that all too often, the hottest prospect who is supposed to be the next big star often falls flat on his face.  As I took my turn to pinch hit for Jimmie Earls this week, I couldn’t help but think of all of the hype surrounding so many young pro athletes these days, as well as those when I was growing up. Despite the continued failures, it seems we just never learn.
