    It’s getting more and more disheartening as I realize we’re living in a world where it’s getting hard to trust people. For example, the recent media blitz about Alex Rodriguez using steroids.

  • Bat Pats sweep weekend series...

    The wind was howling, the mercury remained around freezing and some overnight ice threatened one of the weekend games between St. Catharine College and visiting Indiana University Northwest from Gary, Indiana.

    But Luther Bramblett’s Bat Pats made the chilly temperatures a little more bearable at Edelen-Haydon Field by swinging some hot bats in a three-game sweep of the Redhawks who were in action for the first time this season. Saturday saw the Patriots sweep a twin bill by scores of 10-0 and 9-6. Sunday they plucked the Redhawks 22-1.

    The St. Catharine College softball team has already had three doubleheaders postponed due to inclement weather. And, just as the weather has been up and down, so has Holly Smith’s Patriots who are off to a 2-4 start. After getting swept in the season opening DH at Bellarmine, Smith’s group responded with a sweep at Alice Lloyd College before losing twice at Union.

    The St. Catharine College basketball season ended last Saturday with J.T. Burton’s Patriots falling 77-63 at Lindsey Wilson College. That followed Thursday’s 78-42 setback at Georgetown giving the Patriots a final record of 5-25 in their first NAIA campaign.

    The 2008-09 season came to an end for the Washington County Commanderettes Tuesday night as they fell to Bardstown 54-48 on their home court in the first round of the 19th District Tournament.

  • Smith receives honor

    Tyler Smith is a rare two sport fall athlete. He is a member of the Highlands state runner-up soccer team and a member of the cross country team. Tyler has been a varsity letterman on the Highlands cross country team for four years. He was a part of the 2006 and 2007 AA Regional 5 championship teams. He was also a part of the 2007 cross country team that placed third at the state meet. He has been a two-year varsity starter and captain on the Highlands soccer team. This year the team made it to the state tournament finals for the first time in school history.

    The St. Catharine College softball team ended its junior college status with a bang last year with a regional title and a trip to the national tournament, where they finished in the Elite Eight. Holly Smith, in her fifth year as head coach of the Patriots, sees no reason to not repeat such success with nearly all of her starting lineup returning.

    My girlfriend Cindy came into town for a visit over Valentine’s weekend, and since I had to work that Friday night, I dragged her along to the Washington County/Marion County basketball double-header at WCHS. We’re glad we escaped with our lives!
