    The Washington County Commanders football team faced their first test of the year Friday night when they scrimmaged against the Madison Southern Eagles in Berea, Ky. After all the hours of sweat and hard work, the Commanders finally got a chance to knock helmets with someone other than their teammates.

    The St. Catharine College 18th annual Celebrity Golf Classic was held Saturday at Lincoln Homestead State Park and by all accounts was the best tournament ever.

    “It was a tremendous success,” said Angela Hoffman, director of events and alumni at St. Catharine. “We had the full complement of teams, beautiful weather and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

    On the surface, it may look like every other football field you've ever seen. But below the surface, there have been some improvements done to Washington County High School's football field during the summer.

    During this past summer, Bennett R. Lewis Field underwent more than $13,000 worth of improvements.

    The 2008 Washington County High School Commanders football team held its annual Blue/Gold scrimmage game this past Friday. The players looked good on both sides of the ball during the intra-squad scrimmage. But that was against their own teammates, not against a rival school looking to do some damage. The Commanders are young and the schedule is tough, and the first five weeks of the season will be a trial by fire.

    St. Catharine College head basketball coach Wade O'Connor is leaving to take the position of assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. O’Connor accumulated a 94-29 record in four seasons as Patriots head coach.

    Parents of Washington County High School students could feel some economic relief thanks to a new student sports pass program this school year.

    A $4,000 grant from the Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy will allow WCHS students to attend regular-season home games free of charge this school year.

    Jill Settles, the vice-chair of the Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition, said the passes should be issued to students later this month.

    Skins Game

    The 1st Annual Rosewood Charity Shootout will be held on Aug. 23. Rosewood Golf Club, Lebanon Country Club, Campbellsville Country Club and Lincoln Homestead Golf Club will be participating in the shootout.

    Each club will select a local charity to represent in the Shootout.

    The charity selected by each club will receive a minimum of $500.

    All clubs will nominate a player to participate in the skins game foursome which will tee off at 1 p.m.

    St. Catharine College will host its 18th annual celebrity auction and golf tournament Aug. 8-9.

    The festivities start on Friday when the doors open at 6 p.m. and the Hawaiian luau-themed reception and silent auctions begin in the Spalding Student and Community Center. The celebrity auction begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the live auction. Bidders are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts, shorts, sandals and other resort wear. There will also be a hula dancing contest.

    Well, by now you know that the Cincinnati Reds traded outfielder and future hall-of-famer Ken Griffey Jr. to the Chicago White Sox on July 31.
