  • Joy ride: Vandals damage Idle...

    Damage to Tom Bystrek Field at Idle Hour Park was reported to Springfield Police on Monday after vandals broke in and took a golf cart for a spin late Sunday night or Monday morning.

    Park Director Bernard Smalley was the first to notice the damage on Monday morning and said he immediately called WCHS baseball Head Coach Derek Schuler to find out if his team had been on the field, but they hadn’t.

  • Spaldings sign with SCC

    Former Washington County High School golfers Aaron Spalding and Chase Spalding signed scholarship offers to continue their golf careers at St. Catharine College.

    “I am excited to have Aaron and Chase in our program,” said St. Catharine Head Coach Joan Rizer. “They are good students as well as good golfers. They will fit in well here.”

  • NWTF banquet held earlier this...

    The local National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) chapter Longbeards of the Commonwealth held their annual banquet recently. Money that was raised will help educate people young and old about the great outdoors.This year marks the 40th anniversary of NWTF with the greatest conservation effort in history, bringing back the wild turkey population to 7 million currently. Money raised will also help fund local events such as kids day, the wounded warriors event and the Turkey Hunter’s Care program.

  • SCC softball swept by UVA-Wise

    The St. Catharine College softball team needed just one win Saturday to secure a spot in this weekend’s Mid-South Conference tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. But, although they came close in game two at UVA-Wise, the Patriots could not get the victory they needed.

  • Bat Pats get seventh seed for...

    With the 1-2 weekend at Shawnee State last week, the St. Catharine College Patriots fell to seventh place in the Mid-South Conference as they prepare for the conference tournament that starts Thursday in Kingsport, Tenn. The tournament opener will have them playing second-place Georgetown (33-15, 18-6). The two teams did not meet in the regular season. Cumberland University (Tenn.) is the top-seeded team in the tournament.

  • WC baseball wins 5 of last 6

    Washington County took two of three games last week, and the two wins came in the games that mattered most. The Commanders (11-9) came away with 4-2 and 8-2 road victories over district rivals Bethlehem and Thomas Nelson, respectively, putting themselves at 3-1 and in strong standing as the district schedule heats up. The wins sandwiched an 8-2 loss at the hands of Elizabethtown on Wednesday night.

  • Commanderettes remain perfect in...

    The Commanderette softball team (6-8) dropped a 12-1 result to border rival Marion County (13-5) on Friday at home. It would be tough not to call the week a win overall for Washington County, though, as they pounded Thomas Nelson (1-11) in a district doubleheader on Thursday night by a combined score of 26-0.

    Washington County had plenty of offense Thursday night, but it didn’t come all at once.

    David Thompson was the first male and first overall finisher of the second-annual St. Catharine College military appreciation day 5K run / walk.

    Thompson finished the race in 21 minutes and 42 seconds. Roberta Meyer was the second overall finisher and the first female to cross the finish line. She finished in 23:14.

    In the female 12-and-under group, Laurel Brahm finished first in 26:27. Brianna Mattingly finished second in 39:06.6. Jasmine Benningfield finished third in 39:06.7.
