  • WC softball gets Mudd back, but...

The Commanderette softball team (4-7) is coming off a forgettable week where the bats were lacking in three losses. Games scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday were rained out, while Washington County took a 13-2 loss to Elizabethtown (6-7) and a 3-2 loss at Campbellsville (4-9) on Tuesday and Friday, respectively.

The most recent, though, was a 3-0 loss to Pulaski County (8-6-1) at Idle Hour Park on Monday night.

There will be a new Fifth Region Class A baseball champion this season.
Three time defending Washington County was sent to the sidelines Monday night when they were eliminated by Green County 5-3 at Idle Hour Park.

The visitors were able to secure the win despite being without the services of ace pitcher Brennen Milby.  The Ohio State signee was sidelined with a sore arm, and Commander coach Derek Schuler says his team responded to the news well.

  • SCC softball snaps skid, wins...

One of the longest losing streaks in the history of St. Catharine College softball, a 10 game skid, happily came to an end last week for Holly Smith’s team. And the losing streak was replaced by a four-game winning streak as the Patriots record went to 16-18 overall.

The Patriots began the week with four Mid-South Conference losses to Cumberland (Tenn.) and Campbellsville before sweeping visiting Union College in a non-conference doubleheader. They finished the week with a sweep at conference rival Rio Grande to go 4-4 for the week.

  • All in the Cards

It’s the year of the Cardinal. As I sit here with 12.9 seconds left in the national title game and watch Peyton Siva sink a pair of free throws to put away Michigan for Louisville’s third championship in school history, that’s all you can really say. This was UofL’s year and there wasn’t much that was going to stop them.

There’s no university hotter right now, honestly. They just locked up a long coveted men’s basketball title and the women’s team may be right behind them, depending on Tuesday’s result after press time.

  • Patriots hit 30-win mark again

In his first year (2002) as baseball coach at St. Catharine College, Luther Bramblett’s Patriots won 26 games. In the 11 years since then, including the current campaign, the Bat Pats have won at least 30 games each season.

That streak continued as Bramblett’s bunch won four of six games last week to improve to 30-13. A win over Berea on Tuesday was followed by a doubleheader sweep Wednesday at IU-Southeast. The Bat Pats the traveled to # 25 Lindsey Wilson College for a three game Mid-South Conference last weekend where they won one of three games.

  • Commanderettes crush Cards for 2...

    Washington County vs. Nelson County
    Score:
    11-1 Washington County
    When: Monday, April 8
    Where: Idle Hour Park
Key players: WCHS - Mercedes Cowherd, Hannah Coulter NCHS - Charessa Coomes.
Game highlights: The Washington County softball team (4-4) only had one game on the week, but it was an impressive week nonetheless, as Nelson County (0-6) left Idle Hour Park with an 11-1 defeat at the hands of the Commanderettes.

  • Patriot track team runs at Berea

The St. Catharine College men and women participated in the Berea College Invitational track meet March 23. Blake Jones’ women’s team finished seventh in a nine-team field with 23.5 points while the men were eighth out of nine teams with 19 points.

“We would have had many more points but were missing five people,” explained Jones.

  • SCC softball swept at Georgetown

As many games this season have gone, the Patriots trip to Georgetown included two games which they had a good chance of winning, only to have that opportunity slip away. Such was the case Wednesday when the Tigers held on for a 10-8 win and game one and then pulled away late in the second game for a 5-1 win in Mid-South Conference action.
