  • SCC softball gains momentum,...

    With two doubleheader sweeps last week the St. Catharine College softball team has run its winning streak to six games. Holly Smith’s squad, 12-8 overall, won a pair at Union College on Wednesday and then swept Mid-South Conference rival Pikeville at home on Saturday.

    The Patriots are now 4-2 in the Mid-South which boosted them to third place. Lindsey Wilson is in second place at 7-1, while Campbellsville heads the standings with a 10-0 mark.

  • Commander rallies fall short at...

    Washington County baseball sits at 3-3 after three games last week, which included a pair of losses to Anderson and Adair counties and a win at Casey County on Saturday. The Commanders’ first round 5th Region All-A game against Green County was postponed last Monday and has been rescheduled for April 8 at Idle Hour Park.

  • SCC graduate returns - speaks...

    Nick Houlehan, a recent graduate of St. Catharine College, has carried his success on campus to the workforce.

    Houlehan, who graduated with a degree in criminal justice, landed a job with the police department in Florence, Ky., just two months after commencement.

    Florence is a city of around 75,000 residents, Houlehan told Dr. Harry Toder’s class recently. There are 62 officers in the Florence police department.

  • North Washington Elementary...

    North Washington Elementary School was recently named to the 2013 Kentucky Schools to Watch list.

    At this time, there are about 400 schools nationally that have been designated as schools to watch and 13 schools currently designated in Kentucky. The Schools to Watch program, in 19 states, is part of an initiative developed and guided by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. Schools are recognized for a three-year period; then, at the end of that period must reapply in order to maintain their designation as a STW.

  • WC Youth Coalition to host Town...

    The Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, Mar. 28 at Mordecai’s in Springfield. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. This year’s theme is: “I Won’t Be the One”. Our theme will focus on Underage Drinking, Rx Drug Abuse and Sustainability.

  • WCHS student accepted to WKU...

    David had to fill out a five part application and submit two essays. He had to submit his extra-curricular activities, community service, honors and awards. First-time freshmen who meet any one of the following requirements are eligible to apply:

    • 27 ACT composite, or combined verbal and math SAT of 1210; or
    • 3.8 unweighted high school GPA; or
    • Top 15 percent of graduating high school class.

  • SCC freshman is MSC Player of...

    St. Catharine College freshman southpaw Dylan Shoffner was named Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced by conference officials Monday.

    The Central Hardin High School product tossed a one-hit shutout Friday in a 4-0 win over Bluefiled College. Shoffner threw seven innings and struck out 10 Bluefield batters to run his record to 4-1 on the season. Shoffner helped the Patriots sweep the Rams.

    Shoffner ranks sixth in the conference in ERA (1.69) and fifth in batting average against (.197). His 40 strikeouts are third best in the Mid-South.

  • Commanderette on road to...

    The Washington County softball team started the season with an impressive 15-0 win over Burgin last week, but the Commanderettes were without one of their regulars in the lopsided victory and that won’t be changing for a few more weeks.

    Samantha Mudd, though, is on the comeback trail and has her mind set on an April 15 return at home against Pulaski County.

    Mudd, a senior first baseman, tore her ACL in the Washington County High School powderpuff game back in October.

  • Pats softball steady at .500

    The St. Catharine College softball team remains at .500 for the season in all respects. The Patriots are 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-South Conference. Last week Holly Smith’s team continued the break-even pace with a 2-2 week in two conference doubleheaders.
