  • Baseball: Commander offense...

    The high school baseball season is underway and the Commanders sent a message during the opening week that while they lost several key pieces from last season, they’re still an offense to be reckoned with. The Commanders scored 27 runs while playing three games in three days last week on their way to posting a 2-1 record with both wins coming in five innings after run-ruling their opponent.

  • On fire: SCC baseball wins 19 of...

    Luther Bramblett’s St. Catharine College baseball team has won 19 of its last 20 games to improve to 20-7 for the season. In last week’s action the Bat Pats won all five games, starting with a sweep Tuesday at Mid-Continent University. They followed that by taking all three games in a weekend series against Mid-South Conference rival Bluefield College.

  • Griffins rise in second half,...

    The Westminster (Utah) Griffins rose from the ashes (a 33-27 halftime deficit) to down the St. Catharine College Patriots 69-55 in the first round of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Thursday afternoon in the Frankfort Convention Center. Westminster (28-3) went on to defeat Faulkner (Ala.) in a second-round game, but fell to the overall No. 1 seed Westmont (Calif.) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

    For the week (February 25-March 3), the St. Catharine College softball team played only two games due to bad weather. But the Patriots made the most of those two contests as did junior second baseman Taylor Steff who earned Mid-South Conference Player of the Week honors for February 25-March 3.

  • SCC softball loses three of four...

    The St. Catharine College softball team staged a last inning rally to beat IU-Southeast in the second game of a doubleheader at home Friday. But that was the only game Holly Smith’s team could salvage in four games played at Salt River Electric Field last weekend.

    The Patriots (4-6) dropped Friday’s opener to the Grenadiers by an 11-0 count in five innings before posting an 11-10 victory in the nightcap. On Sunday, Concordia (Mich.) won the opener 10-4 and the second game 11-7.

    The St. Catharine College baseball team had their win streak snapped at 13 last week. But Luther Bramblett’s bunch maintained its momentum in taking the first Mid-South Conference series of the season by taking two of three games from UVA-Wise.

  • Coaching, love of the game...

    A friendship was forged when 2005 Washington County High School graduate Kyle Medley and Paducah (St. Mary High School) native Eric Roof took their talents to St. Catharine College to continue their baseball careers. Nearly eight years later they were together on the diamond again last week, but as assistant coaches at Division I schools and on opposite sides.

  • New coach, same team lead WC...

    They may have a new head coach in the dugout this season, but the 2013 Washington County softball team will look very similar to the 2012 version except they’re a year older and ready to make a push for the 19th District title.

    “At this point we have everyone back,” said first-year Commanderette Head Coach Paul Coulter. “We have one senior who’s been out with a torn ACL, but we’re hoping to have her back some time during the season.”

  • Commanders turn to small ball in...

    Washington County baseball — 18-19 (15-4 in the 5th region) last season — has gotten their opponents’ attention in recent years, winning the last two 5th Region All-A tournament crowns and coming within a run of back-to-back 19th District titles last season.

    It won’t be the same WC team taking the field in 2013 with a core group of seniors departing since last year, but that doesn’t change expectations for coach Derek Schuler’s group.
