Public library taking applications

-A A +A

Library looks to add two board members

The Washington County Public Library Board of Trustees is accepting applications for two board positions that begin on July 1. Wayne Onkst, State Librarian and Commissioner Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, states, “Providing public library service in today’s information age is very challenging. Leadership by public library trustees is essential if public libraries are to provide high quality service for their communities. Great public libraries require dedicated trustees.  Trustees have the opportunity to impact their community through education for residents of all ages.”

There are five members serving on the Washington County Public Library Board of Trustees. The term of office is four years; board members may serve no more than two consecutive terms. One or two trustee terms expire annually. This ensures continuity, yet allows for the regular introduction of new Board members. The library is seeking to identify dedicated individuals who have a passion for libraries and the ability to effectively advocate for them. This is a volunteer position.

Trustees’ general responsibilities are  to prepare for, attend and actively participate in regular Board meetings, as well as committee meetings; serve as advocates for the library, increasing the visibility and accessibility of the library; set policies for the Library District that ensure quality library service is provided, and that reflect a service philosophy appropriate for the community; review, update and approve the Library’s strategic plan; review and approves the annual budget, sets financial policy, reviews monthly financial statements and approve all expenditures and appoint the Library Director to manage daily operations and evaluate his/her performance.

Board applicants are screened and interviewed by the Washington County Public Library Board. A recommendation is then made to the State Librarian and Commissioner Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and then the County Judge Executive approves the final selections.

The role of a Library Trustee is one of great responsibility and pride.  The Washington County Public Library is beginning a new chapter in its long novel, and we need interested and qualified community members to help us on this journey.
