St. Catharine College basketball coach J.T. Burton repeatedly talks about his players’ need for toughness if they hope to succeed in the physical brand of ball in the Mid-South Conference. So, when he welcomed Washington County High School point guard Alex Simms into the Patriot program last week, Burton got just the type of player he is looking for.

“He’s tough as a pine knot,” said Burton of Simms, who signed a scholarship offer Thursday. “The tougher the game is the more he likes it.”

Burton and Washington County head boys basketball coach Russell Burkhead also cited Simms’ ball handling ability as a big plus as he transitions into the college game.

“He is as good as any player I’ve had in 12 years of coaching as far as handling the ball,” added Burkhead.

“It is great to be able to sign a local kid. I know how that is,” said Burton who played at St. Catharine in 1996-97 after graduating from Washington County. “Alex has a good basketball IQ, which will also help him at this level.”

Simms said he considered other options following high school before deciding on St. Catharine.

“Coach Burkhead has always talked to me about playing here, and basketball is a passion of mine. I do understand that there is a lot more intensity at this level and the game is much faster.”

And much tougher, which should suit Simms quite well.
