The Springfield youth involved in a recent study commissioned by the city council had a variety of answers on activity centers they would like to have available. The council plans to soon seek an entrepreneur to partner with the city in opening the most popular answer, a skating rink. Retired UK professor Dr. Lori Garkovich talked with Youth Leadership Washington County teens and middle-school students for the study. The respondents also suggested several other entertainment options, including re-establishing the county fair, bringing in a movie theater (most said they would like a drive-in theater), improvements to the city park, and a coffee shop. The youth overwhelmingly asked for a hang-out place with items such as bean bag chairs, table games and internet access.

The city commissioned Dr. Lori Garkovich, a retired University of Kentucky         faculty member and community development specialist, for the study.
